"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."
-- Mark Twain
In a video posted on the Internet this week, hip-hop star Cameron "Cam'ron" Giles provided viewers with his opinion on a "typical" 9-to-5 job.
While explaining his latest single "I Hate My Job," the Harlem emcee stated, "I worked for five days out my life. Why I can't take a job?" Cam asks. "This, you make your own schedule, right? You get there when you want, you ain't gotta wait and sit in traffic at 9 in the morning, after work. You don't have to worry about rush hour getting home, it's the best. Then on top of that, you probably gonna think you smarter than the person you working for anyway, so it's just gonna [upset you]. So me, personally, I just kinda was raised around people who had their own business and entrepreneurs. I think that's kinda the way it is in Harlem. It's a lot of chiefs and no Indians."
You can always count on Cam to come out of his mouth with some intelligent-sounding ignorance. Some of you may remember his infamous appearance on "60 Minutes" a few years back when he made a fool of himself trying to explain the "No Snitching" epidemic in many urban areas throughout the country.
When asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper "If there's a serial killer living next door to you, and you know that person is, you know, killing people, would you be a snitch if you called police and told them?"
Cam'ron answered, "If I knew the serial killer was living next door to me? No, I wouldn't call and tell anybody on him. But I'd probably move… But I'm not gonna call and be like, you know, 'The serial killer's in 4E'."
For any Dave Chappelle Fans out there, it was a case of "when keeping it real goes wrong."
As far as Cam's latest opinion of a "typical" job: I applaud him for a successful career, but he indeed works hard like everyone else. While his job probably pays better than a few others and does not require the rush hour traffic (especially on I-95!), he misses out on some things.
For starters, he is a slave to his fame, and this requires him to make outlandish comments such as the serial killer quote.
His career allows him to keep an immature and stagnant mind.
I'm not saying he is dumb, by any means; it's just he can't afford to expand his mind and spirituality due to the prison he's created for himself in his musical career.
Growth and maturity could very well lead to fewer album sales or the end of his career. Believe it or not, Cam'ron has bosses to whom he answers just like most people (outside of an elite hip-hop class, including Jay Z, Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre and Diddy).
Cam'ron, like the rest of us, cannot afford to quit his day job…ever.
I don't know about you but I'll take the pension over the nonexistent hip-hop retire-ment plan any day.
Oh, and as for his "a lot of chiefs and no Indians (in Harlem)" analogy, what Harlem is he looking at?
