U.S. 1 closes after shooting

A southbound lane of U.S. 1 in Lorton was shut down for more than an hour Monday afternoon as police investigated a non-fatal shooting.

A 32-year-old man was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital after he drove up to a police officer making a traffic stop and told the officer he had been shot, said Fairfax County Police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt.

The man was shot in a residential area at about 2:25 p.m. off U.S. 1 on Hagel Circle, Gotthardt said. Then he drove, injured, to the nearby police officer for help.

The highway lane was shut down when a Fairfax County Police Medevac landed to fly him to the hospital.

The man, who was wounded in his midsection, is expected to survive, Gotthardt said.

No one has been arrested in connection with the

shooting, but police were still investigating Monday, he said.

"At this time it's believed that the victim and suspect are known to each other," he said on Monday. "Witnesses are being interviewed, but no suspect information is being distributed."

On Monday afternoon Fairfax County police were using dogs to locate the scene of the shooting.
