Evergreen events slated for tonight
Two special events are taking place this evening at Evergreen Plantation Manor House in Haymarket.
Prince William Board of County Supervisor John Stirrup, R-Gainesville District, will unveil the bronze plaque that designates the manor being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It was placed on the register for its architecture and military history associated with the life of Lt. Col. Edmund Berkeley of the 8th Virginia Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War.
Civil War re-enactors will be in attendance.
The unveiling will take place during one of the band breaks, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Southern Persuasion will be the performing band for one of the continuing summer series.
Stirrup has been speaking about the history of the manor house and Berkeley at each of the concerts.
"The Live! At Evergreen" concerts have helped raise awareness, donations and sponsorships for the past several years at scenic Evergreen, nestled at the base of Bull Run Mountain.
The once bustling and glorious home serves as a tangible link to the people and events that shaped that community and its restoration and adaptive reuse is critical to sustaining what is best about the area. It is also on the Virginia Register for Historic Places.
Built by Lewis Berkeley in 1827, the manor house is a Designated Cultural Resource as identified by Prince William County.
