For the eighth year running, corporate sponsors have joined forces with a church-based foundation to hand out nearly 1,100 free backpacks containing school supplies to the neediest of Prince William County.

Restoring Lives Community Development Corporation is a 501(c)3 venture of New Life Anointed Ministries International, a Woodbridge-based church. The nonprofit oversees the annual Back to School Extravaganza, with this year's Just Give challenge being met by BB&T Bank.

Just Give partners help sponsor the charity drive and provide drop-off locations for donations.

The giveaways include backpacks filled with school supplies for all age groups, said church spokeswoman Georgette Patterson, who expected this year's service level to match that of last year, with more than 1,100 aided. Priority is given those who utilize the county's social services, she added.

"This is the eighth year Restoring Lives has done this," Patterson said. "This is one [charity drive] that is truly needed and with the economic situation, we're just pleased can meet the needs of our community," Patterson said.

Clothing, food and college scholarships are also given, and a golf tournament held, according to a press release about the challenge. The clothing donations come from a variety of sources, from churches to businesses like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Patterson said.

"Prince William Chamber of Commerce's office collected the supplies [that were donated]. BB&T provided the drop-off locations. Also, Feed the Children … that's an international organization, gave food. We try and give out about a week's worth of groceries to each family, too," she said.

Application deadline to receive the free supplies has already passed. Still, the Aug. 23 distribution day for           supplies brings with it a free community event for all. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ferlazzo Building this Saturday are planned fashion and talent shows, as well as games, free lunches and other giveaways.

"We will have set up hot dogs, chips, juice," Patterson said, "and have three-on-three basketball, moonhouse, face painting. We'll also have a booth where sponsors like the fire department can give lessons about fire safety and Potomac Hospital can give health checks."

BB&T representatives will be on hand to give financial information, too, she said.
