Do something great for yourself in 2009—join the Lifelong Learning Institute.
The LLI of Manassas was started in 2003 to provide area residents age 50 and older opportunities to continue learning. Interesting classes are held during daytime hours at various venues in the Manassas, Haymarket and Gainesville areas.
A monthly speakers' forum, open to the public at no cost, is held on the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Membership, at a cost of $100 for a full 12 months, allows a member to register for an unlimited number of classes.
The kick off for 2009 will be held Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Java Rock, located in the original Marsteller Middle School on Sudley Road. This "sip and socialize" event is an opportunity to preview the Spring Program Guide and meet current LLI members. All area residents 50 and older are invited.
The first of the free monthly speakers' forums will be held Jan. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Colgan Theater at the Manassas Campus of NOVA, located on Sudley Road. The guest speaker will be Dr. Hortense Hinton, provost of the college, who will speak on expansion plans for the Manassas campus and the college's relationship to LLI.

Attend Elvis' birthday tribute at center
There's still time to make a reservation (for $5) for the Elvis Presley Birthday Tribute being held at the center Wednesday. Wrenn Mangum, a well-known singer and entertainer in Richmond, will provide entertainment. Mangum won first place in the November 2007 regional "Images of the King" contest in Fredericksburg.
The gala will start with a social hour at 3 p.m., followed by dinner and entertainment.
Learn about healthy portions at seminar
A health seminar, "Portion Distortion: Keep an Eye on Portion Size" will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the senior center. As restaurant portions have grown, maintaining a healthy weight involves more then just selecting a healthy variety of foods.
Recognizing and controlling how much we eat becomes an important factor in weight control. This seminar will offer tips on using correct serving sizes to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
