Haymarket town hall canceled

The Haymarket Town Council planned to hold a town hall meeting Monday to update city residents on the status of the Town Center project.

But, it turns out, there’s nothing to update.

The meeting has been canceled until further notice, town officials said.

At the meeting, town officials were slated to discuss the status of the town’s plans to sell property to developer Gerry Kennedy.

Kennedy’s plans to build two buildings to house about 20 businesses on Washington and Jefferson streets have been in the works for more than a year and a half.

In an e-mail to town council members, Town Manager Gene Swearingen said Kennedy is still in talks with banks that are considering financing the project.

Until Kennedy can work out a deal with the banks to finance his project, there’s nothing to discuss with residents, Swearingen said in the e-mail.

The town hall meeting was first scheduled for June 20, then rescheduled to June 29, and now canceled.

A year and a half to arrange financing and the deal isn’t done yet?  Who’s the bigger fool, the buyer who has led the Town along or the Town that bought into this nonsense?
