Today is the first day of the six-week summer session of classes at Northern Virginia Community College, and the Student Services Center has information available. High school and home-schooled students who are at least 16 years old might be eligible to take courses for college credit. The summer session is convenient for college students who have some extra time in the summer to take courses. Visit http://www.nvcc.edu or call 703-323-3000 for details. The Woodbridge campus of NVCC is located at 15200 Neabsco Mills Road.

Congrats to art student

Congratulations to local art students Elizabeth Seager and Caleb Fletcher, who were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Prince William Art Society. The annual Jewell Pratt Burns Art Scholarships are for high school art graduates. Seager plans to earn her degree in art therapy, and Fletcher's future education includes attending The School of Art and Design in New York.

Center for the Arts offers summer worksho

Shakespeare's adventurous work lives on this summer at the Center for the Arts, where a three-week master workshop is being offered for ages 13 to 20. Call 703-330-2787for registration and fee information. The workshop will be July 6 to 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drama and suspense, rivalry and regret ... you'll learn to act through it all as you discover the characters of Shakespeare.

Lake Ridge soccer cam

Soccer camps are being held at the Lake Ridge soccer field this week, and again July 6 to 10, July 20 to 24, and Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. There will be a "Challenger British Soccer Camp," and a "UK Elite Soccer Camp" with licensed coaches from Great Britain. Call Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation at 703-491-2154 if you want to learn more about these soccer camps.

Visit local farmers' market

This summer, the Occoquan Farmer's Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the large parking lot on Mill Street, near the bridge at Va. 123. This is where you can find fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, honey, baked goods and more.

Fourth of July fu

I hope your Fourth of July weekend is filled with lots of fireworks and celebrations! The Potomac Nationals will play baseball at the Pfitzner Stadium along Prince William Parkway, and there will be food and fireworks going on there. Whatever you do, keep safe. This is a good time for a piece of apple pie and some patriotic Fourth of July music. Happy 4th!
