i-95 northbound lanes to be shifted
Today and Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Transportation will partially close the northbound lanes of I-95 in Lorton for one and a half miles as crews shift the northbound lanes five 5 feet to the left.
The night work is scheduled between 9:30 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Tuesday and again from 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting. The night work will close two left lanes of northbound I-95 beginning a half mile south of Exit 153, Lorton Road (Va. 642). The closure ends north of the Pohick Creek bridge.
The I-95 HOV lanes will be open northbound to relieve traffic during the night work, according to Virginia Megaprojects Communications Director Steve Titunik.
On Monday night crews will shift the left lane by five feet. Motorists on Tuesday morning will notice that the middle lane will become wider. On Tuesday night crews will shift the two right lanes five feet, completing the work. All three lanes and the ramp at Exit 153 will remain shifted until late 2009. The lanes will not narrow.
Crews are shifting lanes to build concrete bridge approach slabs, which provide a transition area between the asphalt road and the concrete bridge deck.
