LETTER: What graduates should be told

I would like to congratulate Alex Granados on his article on “commencement.” Especially the part where he declares, “We all die. And it could happen anytime.”
He didn’t mention this in his article, but he totally agrees with a biblical verse that reads in Hebrews, chapter 9, verse 27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to
die, but after this the JUDGMENT.”

If Granados had quoted that verse, he would have to explain the judgment. The explanation would be the most important thing ever told to a graduate or anyone.

The biblical answer is given in the Gospel of John, chapter 3, verse 18: “He that believeth in him (Jesus) is not condemned (heaven) but he that believeth not is
condemned already (hell) because he hath not believed in the name (authority) of the only begotten son of God.”

To believe in Jesus means to surrender your life to him and to make him your Lord (boss). You give him the authority to control your life.

Granados states in his article, “One day we will die, so best we treat ourselves and others kindly now. It isn’t a rat race. It isn’t a competition. It isn’t a war. As a
friend of mine says, we’re just passing through. Make the most of it. Do your best.”

That is good advice, but if you are concerned where you are going to spend an eternity after you die, it begins with “believing.” In my humble opinion, that’s the
advice I would have given the graduates.

“To believe in Jesus means to surrender your life to him and to make him your Lord (boss). You give him the authority to control your life.“

I duly note this quote says you will give Jesus the authority to control YOUR life - and speaks nothing toward giving YOU the authority to control the lives of others.

Thank you Mr. Hahn for not muddling faith with desire - as many do.

scorpio - are you reading this?
