Open Championships headed to Las Vegas
Published: November 19, 2008
Prince William County league bowlers that are members of the United States Bowling Congress will be interested to know that the 2009 Open Championships are being held at the Cashman Convention Center in Las Vegas. Although not too many bowlers from the County will be making the trek to Vegas but the USBC Open Championships do provide regular league men and women bowlers a top flight national tournament in which to compete.
The tournament will kick-off on February 21, 2009 and squad times are available through July 24, 2009.
The 2009 tournament will feature a new look with state-of-the-art LED scoreboards and instead of 56-lanes and a capacity of 16,300 teams as originally planned, the 2009 Open will feature 60-lanes and be able to accommodate 17,400 teams, which could make it the largest tournament in history. The lanes are specially constructed for this tournament.
“The interest in the 2009 event in Las Vegas has been overwhelming, so we decided to add more lanes to accommodate all interested bowlers,” said Jack Mordini, USBC Vice President of Membership and Tournament Services. “We are certainly amazed and grateful for the positive response, and we are thrilled that the tournament continues to grow each year.” Last year’s tournament was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. and paid out a $5.5 million prize fund to 36,000 bowlers and 11,000 teams. Projected prize fund for the 2009 tournament will be available once the tournament begins.
The USBC Open consists of team, doubles, singles, optional all-events and a team all-events category. There are two divisions, and the division for which you are eligible is based on your average. To determine your division, see the following information:
• Classified Team - Five bowlers whose combined average is 900 or under.
• Classified Doubles – Two bowlers whose combined average is 360 or under.
• Classified Singles/All-Events - Average 180 or under.
• Regular Team - Five bowlers whose combined average is above 900.
• Regular Doubles – Two bowlers whose combined average above 360.
• Regular Singles/All-Events - Average above 180.
Why should you enter the Open Championships?
As one of the most prestigious events in the sport of bowling the USBC Open Championships is the national tournament for grassroots bowlers that are USBC members. It is an opportunity for every USBC member to compete for a national title while also being able to bowl in a one-of-a-kind bowling stadium and to cash in on a huge prize fund.
Since the event is held in different cities each year, it also provides members with an opportunity to see the country. Most entrants combine their competition experience in the event by also taking in all the attractions that all host cities have to offer.
For the thousands of loyal Open Championships participants, the event is the highlight of the bowling season.
How much does it cost to enter the USBC Open Championships?
When you think about it, the cost to enter is really quite inexpensive. Entry fee is $45 per event per bowler: (Breakdown per event: $25 for prizes and $20 for expenses); All-Events - optional $15. ($14 for prizes and $1 to Team USA)
This comes to $150 per bowler total for team, doubles, singles and all-events.
If you are going to Las Vegas and want to bowl in this tournament you need to hurry to enter. The official closing date for entries is Dec. 12, 2008. If you would like to have more information visit http://www.USBCopen.com, or contact the Tournament Entries department at (800) 514-2695, ext. 3320.
