Saturday night was a big night for Willard Lawrence in Late Models at Old Dominion Speedway.Published: June 29, 2008
The 37-year-old Haymarket driver grabbed his fourth and fifth victories of the season in twin-50 lap races. Adam Brenner also captured his fourth victory of the year in a 45-lap early race that completed last week’s rain-shortened 75-lapper.
In the first twin 50, Lawrence started fifth and took second from Doug Liberman in lap 27 and was then hot on Ray Terczak’s bumper until lap 47 when Terczak went low after a lap car got in the way of the leaders. Law-rence went high and snagged the lead and the win.
“I got lucky,” Lawrence said. “We wouldn’t have won this race if the lap car hadn’t got in there. And I never worked so hard in a race.”
Terczak, who is seventh in points and has four top fives, including two seconds, was second.
“I thought we had that one,” Terczak said. “Lawrence raced me great. We’ll come out and try again next week.”
Mike Southard, who started 14th, was third. He got around Liberman in lap 27 for the spot.
Brenner, who started sixth, was fourth and is 51 points behind Lawrence. Les Miranda was fifth.
In the second twin, a brief shower caused leader Brenner to slow enough that Mike Southard took the lead in lap 25. Lawrence followed Southard around Brenner for second and then got around Southard in lap 44 after the two rode door-to-door for nearly two laps.
“Southard can run the high side better than just about anybody,” Lawrence said. “He is tough. And he is a class act.”
Southard took home two seconds and a third in three races Saturday. He has five top fives in the last six races and is fourth in points.
“I’m pretty pleased with second,” Southard said. “I only had a third place car. Things are going pretty good for us lately. Hopefully, we can get some wins soon.”
Brenner was third, Liberman fourth and Terczak fifth.
In the rain-makeup for the June 21st race, Brenner started in the lead, which began on lap 31. He kept ahead of the field as Mike Southard and Willard Lawrence battled for second. Southard held onto second and Willard was third, his first finish outside of the top two this season.
“Our tires were too used up in that one,” Lawrence said.
Les Miranda was fourth and Kevin Hall fifth. It was Hall’s first top five in the division.
“That was great,” said Hall.
In Mini Stocks, Davey Callihan came up with his second straight win. Callihan started sixth and took over the lead from Bobby Able in turn four of lap six.
“The car ran good the first half of the race,” Callihan said. “I want to thank my granddad and everybody else who helped me.”
On lap 25, Able’s engine blew in turn one and Jason Darne took over second and finished in the spot. Scotty Gore was third, Mike Carte fourth and Steve Purks fifth.
In Legends, Roger Austin, Jr. collected his third win of the season. Austin started second and took the lead in lap two from Darnell Vance. Austin and Ryan Ellis then ran a tight race, with Ellis getting a bumper inside Austin once. But Austin pulled quickly away.
It was Austin’s fifth top two of the season. He is 32 points behind David Polenz in the points battle.
“It’s always a pleasure racing with Ryan,” said Austin, who won two races at Summit Point in Hyperfest on June 22nd. “I don’t think I had the fastest car. Ryan definitely was faster. But it’s one thing to catch somebody and it’s another thing to pass.”
In U-Cars, Bryan Fox, who is 18 points ahead of Billy Ingle in the points battle, picked up his fourth win of the season. Fox started 11th after coming in second last week. He got around Ingle in lap 18.
Ingle was second, Jeff Beamer third, Tyler Cypher fourth and Greg Sites fifth.
“If Billy wouldn’t have gone to the high side, I wouldn’t have caught him,” Fox said, referring to Ingle going high to avoid a lap car.
“I had a shot at him,” Ingle said.
