CALL TO ACTION: Volunteers sought for Manassas Fall Jubilee
Published: August 30, 2009
Good morning, Prince William. I know it’s hard to believe but fall is right around the corner and those super folks at Historic Manassas are very busy gearing up for the 27th Annual Fall Jubilee on Oct. 3. This fun day for the entire family includes crafts, displays, entertainment and of course great food. One-hundred volunteers are needed for a host of fun jobs including the day of the event as well as the before. Fall Jubilee takes up the majority of Old Town Manassas and this year promises to be another smashing success. Please call Debbie at 703-361-6599 to learn more about all the ways you can be part of the fun and success.
Those wonderful folks at Action in the Community Through Service/Turning Points have scheduled the new volunteer training for Sept. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This organization, as you recall, is our only domestic violence intervention program. Domestic violence affects the entire family, so if you are looking for that very special volunteer job that affords you incredible sense of accomplishment this may be the job you’ve been waiting for! Volunteers are trained to be advocates, group leaders for women, men and children, crisis listeners, safe house workers, teen seminar leaders and court advocates. They also are looking for bilingual Spanish speakers as well. Please call Peggy at 703-221-4460, Ext. 225, to learn more.
Hey teens — I know you’re counting down the last days of summer vacation, but this is the perfect opportunity for you to join a super group of kids to do work in the community. The Joe 15 Team creates fun opportunities for community service throughout the year. It’s a great way for you to do community service for school or club while learning more about our community and making it a better place for all. Bring your best game and leadership skills to the table and work on that volunteering resume for college at the same time. Please call Debbie at 703-895-1606 or check out the Web site joe15team.org to learn more.
And while we’re thinking about school — please don’t forget about a wonderful group of teen moms continuing with their education, pre-natal care and parenting skills with the support of our Retired and Senior Volunteers. You can help this wonderful Resource Mothers Program by replenishing baby supplies. As you’re out and about, please consider picking up diapers, wipes, baby girl clothes so we can give these teens an easy hand-up for their babies. You can drop off donations to the Resource Mother program at the health dept. office at 4001 Prince William Parkway or give Diane a call at 703-369-5292, Ext.207, to learn more.
Do you have a little time to help a disabled senior with some basic housekeeping chores in the Manassas area? Please call Ann at Quarry Station Apartments 571-220-1840 to learn how you can be a special angel to a senior in need.
The fall weather is right around the corner ,which makes playing golf for a great cause the perfect way to play hooky from work on Sept. 18. Please mark your calendars, clean up the clubs, gather your pals and support the fabulous folks at Project Mend-A-House with their event at Bristow Manor Golf Club. Tickets are just $100 for the day including lunch and great door prizes. Help support all the wonderful work they do for seniors and disabled members of our community to keep them safe in their own homes. Please call Kevin at 703-499-2247 to join in the fun and contribute to the solution.
Mary Foley is the executive director of the Voluntary Action Center in Manassas.
