Justine Huheey, age 9, was presented with the Garry Evans Youth Volunteer of the Year Award at the Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE) annual dinner and meeting. She has been attending Children’s Services activities with her parents, Rob and Amy Sue Huheey, since she was 2 years old, and has been an active volunteer for the past several years. From simply playing with the children to planning holiday games and activities to portraying an elf for the yearly Secret Santa Shop photo party, Justine has been sharing her childhood with others in the hope of bringing comfort to children in challenging circumstances. She also has gone out into the community to do projects on behalf of SERVE, such as collecting Halloween costumes for the shelter children.

In presenting the award, Volunteer Coordinator Jan Hawkins introduced Justine as “a delightful young lady. She has spent much of her young life being taught the spirit of giving, and this will no doubt carry over into adulthood.”

“Justine is a special girl. She obviously learned the value of compassion and service from her parents, and she’s been an inspiration to us here at SERVE,” added Rob Sturm, Chairman of SERVE.

The Garry Evans Youth Volunteer of the Year Award is named in honor of Garry Evans, a retired AT&T employee who volunteered up to 40 hours a week to SERVE, providing support and assistance to the old Thrift Store on Nathan Court in Manassas. After winning every possible SERVE volunteer award, the decision was made to name the youth volunteer award in his honor.
