Man shot during home invasion

Police said a man shot in the head during a home invasion in Dumfries last week walked to a nearby fire station for help.

Detectives believe that the man who was shot was one of three armed men who forced their way into a town house in the 2900 block of Buell Court at about 8:25 p.m. Thursday, said Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman, in a release Monday.

The victims, a man and a woman who were in the house at the time of the intrusion, called police and reported a burglary in progress.

The three gunmen forced the man and the woman to the third level of the town house where the shooting occurred, Hernandez said.

Police did not release details of the how the shooting unfolded.

The gunmen, including the one who was shot in the head, jumped from the third floor window to escape.

A police canine unit found another of the men hiding a short distance away, with an injured leg. Police could not find the third man, Hernandez said.

The man who was shot was later flown to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Hernandez said.

Police said the identities of the gunmen are “being developed.” No arrests had been made by Monday.

The victims were not injured, Hernandez said.

Keith Walker can be reached at 703-369-6751.

There are plenty of great cops in PWC.

People who have trouble with cops routinely are usually on the iffy side of things.

Those folks must be pretty bitter. *dripping sarcasm* I’m glad to hear they are OK; 2nd Amendment use at its finest! smile

PWCPD is doing an excellent job with the resources they have.  In response to trublueamerican, there are three sides to ever story, your side, their side, and the truth.  I wonder what part of the truth you are leaving out.

I am sure that there are some good officers in PWC but the ones that I have had a run in with are highly ineffective. I have had a couple times where I had to call them because I had someone trying to break in I grabbed my gun and brandished it and they ran. The cops did not do a thing about it they didnt even show the first time. I did not bother even calling a second time. For domestic disputes you could tell that my stepdad got violent and they never arrested him even when I was bandaging up my mom. Instead they put me in handcuffs and then the arrested my mom another time for fighting back. Then when I was 16 they did an illegal search on me when I was walking down the street at night with a bag of milk from Walmart. I had 10 minutes till curfew was in effect and it was male officers who did the search. I am a female and I was not doing anything wrong. We dont only need more cops we need more BETTER cops.

trickydix2000, too many well paid federal employees in PWC for this to turn into another Boys in the Hood.

Yes, criminals know cop patterns.  Presence of LE in a neighborhood or community cuts down on most crimes.  Straight out of cops 101.

I have no problems with responsible citizens arming themselves.  I have a problem with generically telling people you don’t know to go get a gun.

Blue, just so I understand.  You are saying that more police officers will be more of a crime deterrant which in effect will mean less home invasions?

I don’t really get that logic since if the assumption is that crime doesn’t occur where a cop is present it would make more sense that as the ratio of cops increases more and more crime will focus on defenseless segments of the population - robberies and burglaries and proportionatly, we will see more home invasions (most people won’t resist and cash/jewelery in a tight economy are usually hoarded at home).

I’m not advocating that a person that I’ve never met get armed.  However, I respect that they have that right - if they so choose.  What I said is that this person should get trained on the firearm and understand the legalities of use.  I have to trust that any adult with sense will know if, when and how to handle a legal firearm to defend thier family.

Having enough officers is more of a crime deterrant than every yahoo in the world having a weapon.

It is irresponsible to tell people you do not know to go get a gun when you do not know their age, mental condition, fire arms training or anything else about them.

I never criticized our PD.  I am very supportive of PWCPD.  I want them to have the officers needed.

Blue,

How exactly will funding help to decrease home invasions?

If the PWCPD can afford over 200K for a boat - I think there is more than enough room for budget cuts.

Drwho, make sure that your friends get some good training - both in handling of the firearm and in terms of the legality of use.  Remember, in VA you can NOT use (lethal) force to defend property - only life.  I have no issue with a person taking personal charge of thier protection and security - just make sure they’re ready for it and understand what’s envolved.

FWIW, the noise a shotgun makes when you cycle a round into the chamber is a major deterant.
