Deane presents statistics on illegal immigration enforcement

Prince William County police Chief Charlie T. Deane presents a update on the illegal immigrant enforcement by county police after a month of enforcement to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Tuesday in Woodbridge

In the first month of the Prince William County Police Department’s illegal immigration enforcement initiative, officers arrested 39 illegal immigrants on criminal charges and identified an additional 50.

The numbers came from police Chief Charlie T. Deane’s report on the program’s results that took effect a month ago today, requiring police officers to check the immigration status of individuals when there’s reason to believe that person is in the country illegally.

Deane presented the findings to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors at Tuesday’s public hearing, and again Wednesday at a news conference held to “clarify” the data police provided.

Although the statistics largely leave out the contacts and arrests made by the six-member criminal alien unit, Deane said the unit was called in for two arrests, one in which the person had an outstanding warrant of removal issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The other, Deane said, was taken into custody as an “illegal alien who had entered the country without inspection.”
In all, he said, police made contact with 89 illegal immigrants.

Of those, local charges were placed against 39, 25 were released on traffic or criminal summons and two were taken into custody for federal immigration violations, police said.

Additionally, 21 individuals identified as illegal were released and no charges were placed, Deane said, and two were later determined to be in the country legally.

The felony and misdemeanor charges placed against illegal immigrants since March 3 represent a fraction of arrests typically made in a single month, with the average standing at around 1,100, Deane said.

According to police, the following felony charges were placed: one for attempted murder stemming from a Montgomery County, Md., case; one for cocaine possession; two for grand larceny; one for felony hit and run; and two for shoplifting.

Of the misdemeanor charges placed against illegal immigrants since the start of the program, nine were for drunk in public; three were for domestic assault; eight were for driving under the influence; two were for providing a false ID; five were for no operators license; one for petit larceny; one for possession of marijuana; one for resisting arrest; one for sexual assault; and one for shoplifting.

In the majority of cases, contact was made during a call for service, second to that was traffic for stops.

Stops were also made while police were investigating suspicious persons and vehicles, according to police.

In each of the 89 contacts police had with illegal immigrants, Deane said officers had probable cause to check the person’s status.

Deane did not know how probable cause was developed in those cases, but said that someone providing multiple addresses or driving without a license are examples of indicators that could be used.

“Probable cause is seldom a single factor … and it’s a flexible term,” Deane said Wednesday.

He also defended the two instances where the person was found to be in the country, saying in one of the cases the man thought he was here illegally.

“The circumstances of those cases justified the questioning,” Deane said.

I am glad that this is how you people say thanks to the thousand of illegals that have and are building you homes and buildings.  I can’t believe I live in such a racist county, Hopefully one day the world change for everyone.

If they are here illegally then please tell me why they were not held to be sent back home? They broke the law what part of that don’t you understand or is there a new meaning for the word illegal exactly what part of it don’t you understand because I fully know what it means..try explaining that again to all those that are here illegally while loading them up on a flight back home to never to return here again…

If you kgotthardt wants to mobilize the community, provide personal time in order to collect founds and work with La Raza, Mexico Without Borders or the Mexican Consul, to provide civic education to illegal immigrants, you are welcome to do it, but not with taxpayer money. The county is trying to reduce expenses due to the large number of illegal immigrant, don’t you get it.
Good job Chief , we just need more cooperation from ICE.

It feels great to not only lay claim to a place which didnt belong to us in the first place, but also to make sure no one “illegal” is allowed to inhabit our space.

I’m sure everyone who has posted here is equally laudatory to the PWC PD when you hear about arrests for crimes committed by people who are legally in the County.

At least I can enjoy the spoils of all this - the reduced rate of DWB in Prince William County.

Wow.  I can’t believe the people accusing the PD of not doing their jobs.  That’s just sad.

I don’t know where this is coming from, but this is just far off the track. On the contrary - if the Police Department would do a drive-by I believe the citizen of PWC would clapp their hands in support. I would!!!

In all, Chief Deane said, police made contact with 89 illegal immigrants. Of those, local charges were placed against 39, 25 were released on traffic or criminal summons and two were taken into custody for federal immigration violations, police said.

Now in my book this looks fantastic: 39 charges, 25 released and TWO were taken into custody. In my book that reads they have gotten of lightly.

But, instead of looking at this negatively I believe in positivity: Since the rest was released with a summons, highly unlikely that they show up for court. They will disappear like they have left their houses - overnight and without paying the rent/mortgage and everything in total mess. Doesn’t cost PWC a dime and they can crawl under the next stone (another county?) until that well runs dry.

Thank you PWC Police Department (even if the Chief was against it) - at least the regular cop does his job!!!!!!!!

“The felony and misdemeanor charges placed against illegal immigrants since March 3 represent a fraction of arrests typically made in a single month, with the average standing at around 1,100, Deane said.“  A FRACTION means a small amount.  When people argue that most of the immigrant community are good residents, this is what they mean.

Seems like some alcohol and substance abuse education would reduce about half of these problems.  Oh, that’s right.  PWC doesn’t want to educate “illegals” about drug abuse or help people with addiction problems.  The BOCS would rather have drunk drivers and substance abusers in the streets so Board members can cut off their noses to spite OUR faces.

There are alot of people who say that illegals are good for the community, so lets take a look shall we: DUI, Sexual assault, felony hit and run, larceny, oh and my favorite attempte murder. Yes that is a fine months work for illegals. Lets see if they can top that list this month.

It does seem like ICE is following the same criteria of FEMA’s Michael Brown. Perhaps ICE will get a “heck of a job” congrats from President Bush also. Don’t forget ICE funding is being squandered on keeping illegals OUT OF IRAQ. Just a trillion or so that could be used to solve local issues.

Well, I’ll guess the program works just fine in PWC. Very satisfied with the results if it gets these criminal elements out of our county.
