Residents discuss proposed Manassas-area asphalt plant

May and June have been busy for Bristow's Alexander Kot, who has led discussions on proposed asphalt plants that would be located at 9514 Hornbaker Road, northwest of Manassas and within a few miles of Sheffield Manor, Victory Lakes, Saybrook and other communities.
The early June meeting was held at Old Dominion Baptist Church on Linton Hall Road, where more than 150 people learned about the health, environmental, traffic and property value risks associated with asphalt plants. Representatives from Gainesville's Wetland Studies and Solutions Inc. were present to answer questions.
Among other concerns, Kot said, the plants would be close to Victory Elementary School. Kot said his research indicated the proximity could affect the health of children with asthma and other medical conditions.
In May, the Prince William County Planning Commission recommended approval for Finley Asphalt & Sealing Inc.'s permit request for its business.
Kot said his initial concerns were, first, that most residents had not heard of the plans, and second, residents were not educated on the toxins produced by asphalt plants. "I know how bad the effects are," he said.
Kot is encouraging communities to contact the Board of County Supervisors to voice concerns.

Spike nobody appreciates personal attacks, vulgarity or propaganda. I can appreciate that you are possibly a stakeholder or a supporter of Finley Asphalt and that their bottom dollar must be important to you. It is not important to me or I would wager, anyone else in the Bristow community who is facing down a hot-mix asphalt plant in their backyard. If you had a valid argument as we the community do, I imagine you would be able to use facts, built up by empirical processes supported by consensus, and published in the public domain to support your position. You however, cannot and do not. The moral and responsible thing is for corporations like Finley to find locations for polluting industry within Prince William County that are SAFE and AMENABLE to everyone in the community. One quarter mile from our local elementary school and 1000’s of single family homes is not safe, nor amenable. No one is suggesting Finley not have a hot-mix plant, we’re just trying to work with Finely and supporters like you to find an appropriate place. Regards.
Spike, it’s not just your spelling that is offbase. The people that you claim bought Cracker Jack houses paid several hundred thousand to one million dollars, an investment in what we thought western PWC stood for: high tech innovative companies. While we understood it was an industrial park, we were under the impression it was going to be high tech industry. Please educate yourself on the original intent for western PWC. The area was proffered in 1989 to prevent asphalt from coming in, the planning commission at that time had the forethought to realize that the area you claim we destroyed was already zoned for residential. Just because the BOCS changed the zoning last summer without notifying George Mason, Innovation, and the surrounding neighborhoods isn’t our fault. I hope once you have a grasp on what you are speaking about you will post a more intelligent comment. I don’t think you really want the highest income producers in PWC to leave, that just means higher taxes for you!
my grammer&spelling;might be lousy But I’m not the one who bought a house next to an industrial park
Well spike, maybe you can contact Finley Asphalt & Sealing Inc. and ask them to build their new plant in your neighborhood! Maybe your neighbors won’t mind the putrid smell 24 hours a day. After all it sounds like you know everything about the asphalt process and how environmentally safe it is and what the possible medical effects are for nearby residents. P.S. Spelling and grammar checkers are a wonderful thing.
