Student receives letter of commendation
Christine Sampson, a senior at Evangel Christian School in Dale City, was presented a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The award was presented to Sampson on Friday by Peter Timmins, principal of Evangel Christian School. This is an exceptional honor as only approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
5th Annual Falcon-Bruin Fun Run Nov. 7
The 5th Annual Falcon-Bruin Fun Run will be held Nov. 7. A one-mile competitive run will begin at 8 a.m., a one-mile fun run/walk will begin at 8:15 and a 5K will begin at 8:30. All races will begin at Ashland Elementary School, 15300 Bowmans Folly Drive, Manassas. All school-age participants will receive a finisher’s medal. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age group for the 5K. All proceeds will benefit the Ashland Elementary School Physical Education Department and the Forest Park High School cross country and track and field teams. Pumpkin Pandemonium comes to Battlefield High
The Gainesville Ruritans and Battlefield High School will hold the 3rd Annual Pumpkin Pandemonium on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Battlefield High School, 15000 Graduation Drive, Haymarket. Admission is free to this family-oriented event, which is geared toward children of all ages.
To raise funds for the club in support of the local community’s needs, the Ruritans will sell pumpkins of various sizes. The event will also feature games, amusements, pony rides, a petting zoo, entertainment, slides, a rock-climbing wall, hayrides and a dunking booth. There will also be an art show of elementary, middle and high school students, as well as food vendors. Various school clubs from Battlefield High School will also have booths for club fundraising.
