Members of Stonewall Jackson High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter participated in National Young Readers’ Day last month at West Gate and Ellis Elementary schools.
Organized by the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce, National Young Readers’ Day encourages students to take an interest in reading.
FBLA members talked about the importance of reading in their lives and read a teacher-selected book to every class at the two schools Nov. 13.
“FBLA members found the experience gratifying as they read to future Stonewall Jackson High School Raiders, and their young counterparts became very fond of their ‘readers,’ smiling, waving and calling out to them as we left to return to Stonewall,” said Brenda Hayden, FBLA adviser.
“This was a great day for everyone. The staff and administration of West Gate and Ellis made us feel welcome and part of their school family.”
In addition to reading to the students, the FBLA members presented Ellis and West Gate with new books to add to their libraries. Staff and administration at Stonewall Jackson donated the books.
High-schoolers participating were: Luis Aguirre, Mohamed Ali, Leyden Campos, Hope Flomo, Edward Fu, Cree Garrett, Ashley Hamilton, Markie Jackson, LaNay Johnson, Peter Mawolo, Brittany McDaniel, Lisdeth Morales, Janeth Rodriguez, Christopher Sandoval, Hiba Shaikh, Taneea Shaw, Fowell Tucker, Veronica Valle, Aleda Weathers, Alvenia Weathers and Cameron Whitten. Their sponsors were Hayden and Jill Crayne.
