Rep. Wolf tells ICE to shape up

U.S. Congressman Frank R. Wolf-10th District, Virginia sent a letter Tuesday to the Department of Homeland Security in reference to the Immigration & Customs Enforcement 287 (g) program at the Prince William-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center.

Addressed to Secretary Michael Chertoff, Wolf states that he is troubled that ICE has “not upheld its obligations in the timely removal of illegal detainees from the detention facility.” Included in Wolf’s letter is a copy of the letter sent to Homeland Security by jail board chairman Patrick J. Hurd on March 21.

The letter cites factors making the transfer of prisoners to ICE slow and cumbersome as well as the lack of responsiveness by ICE on this issue.

In that letter, Hurd claims that the jail is experiencing a delay of almost four weeks from the time it notifies ICE that paperwork has been processed to the time ICE removes detainees from the facility.

According to the agreement, ICE is supposed take those who have served their sentences within 48-hours.

According to Hurd, nearly 1,200 inmates have been processed since July and 632 have had ICE detainers placed on them by jail staff. This workload is taking its toll on staff, said Hurd, and the slow removal of prisoners is not helping matters.

Hurd’s letter lists four options to resolve what it calls an unacceptable situation: ICE coming on a set day every week to remove detainees, returning to original stated plan of processing only “worst of the worst felons,” releasing any alien subject to an ICE detainer after 48 hours and completion of all local charges by April 15 or the termination of the agreement altogether.

After meeting with ICE officials last week, jail superintendent Peter A. Meletis said ICE told them they will be “rectifying and solving problems based on the amount of people we’re booking [at the jail].”

Meletis would not comment further on the issue.

Phdee the arrests at Landsdowne Resorts and the cement plant are enough proof for me, forged papers, stolen identities, even mentioned in the article. It is obviously not necessary to go to the authorities with all that proof already in the authorities hands. LOL. Incidentally some employers are in collusion with their employees and lie to ICE or other enforcement bodies i.e Freddy Lopez and his forged documents and stolen identities outfit as reported in numerous local newpapers. Phdee the authorites already realize the gravity of the problem all kidding aside , i can only assist them in pointing out illegals in the county. Once the numbers stabilize you will realize how much of a benefit this program really is. Chris Cummings

Most of the illegals arrested since the Mar 3, 2008 enforcement date have been by ICE itself, so they have the responsibility to handle those deportees. Chris Cummings

Godsaveus, it seems to me we have two options. The first is to continue to pretend those leaving PWC are leaving because of ICE crackdowns instead of due to the lack of construction jobs. Rest assured, when construction comes back, the population will return. Second is we can know who is living in our community or we can continue to shut our eyes, then get gleeful when we catch one doing something wrong. I hope it’s not your wife or child injured in an accident with an unlicensed driver that runs away out of fear. And I guess there is a third option. That would be for the federal government to actually fund all these wonderful programs you wax on about. One day, you’ll wake up and realize without funding, you have nothing but paper tigers assigned to our county’s security.  As for me, I would sleep better knowing someone has a clue about who is living down the street from me. And oh yea Bozo, nice touch to add all the corporate benefits to my statement. I guess plain English is too tough a language for you.

I have repeatedly posted that ZCX has no facts on anything; I have given him the challenge to go to the appropriate authorities and maske a sworn affadavit on the “crimes” committed by both legals and illegals, providing his evidence.  He doesn’t take me up, because he knows he would be committing a felony. I want to make the same challenge to cobra, and any of the other anti-immigrant crowd. This includes HSM, letiecq, the BOCS boys, and the flatulence crowd on this website. Show us your proof!!!  And you cannot!!!!!

That may be, but I think you’re missing the point.  The Post asked ICE last summer if they would be able to handle a big increase in deportation requests from PWC.  They said “Not likely” and explained why not.

So here we are nine months later and ICE is slow moving illegal detainees from the county.  Just like they said they would be.

I don’t really understand what facts you think have changed.  If ICE is doing a good job, why is Rep. Wolf sending them letters asking them to get their act together?

jVA Your statement is partially true, the information was published recently but the fact is that it comes from last summer interview. ICE is doing more arrest to illegal immigrants than PWC , besides that PWC police do not have round-ups operations.
The second part of my response is for your body raywilliams and his silly comment.

Godsaveus, sorry I don’t really understand what you’re saying in your comments.  But nothing I wrote was from my memory.  I quoted the Washington Post verbatim from the 4/09/2008 issue.

So I’m pretty confident I have my facts straight and that my information is up to date.  Here’s the link for you:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/09/AR2008040903636.html

Again I’m not sure I understood what the rest of your post was about.  I don’t support giving any rights or benefits to illegals.  I just think Corey Stewart’s “plan” to deal with the problem is a self serving, political joke that is costing us millions.

“cobra/zcx ... you all got the number of illegals living in PWC??“

HA!  No one has the numbers.  And the numbers of real criminals “caught” are less than 1% of the population.  We are spending all this money for less than 1% of the population?  Then we want to tell the elderly we can’t have someone come in a plug up a leaky roof?  Come on.

JVA You need to update your information, or you got a problem with your memory,  ICE is checking employers hiring illegal immigrants, two times in the last 30 days ,one in PW arresting illegal immigrants from a concrete company and the second one in Loudon Co, arresting illegal immigrants from a luxury resort.
Yea, the solution for the illegal immigration is provide DL to all illegal immigrants,  work permit, may be social security, retirement plan, universal health insurance , unemployment benefits. Something else ?
I have some doubts….  Are PWC and the local politicians designated to provide all those benefits and documentation ?

By law and their current agreement with the county ICE has to pick up their prisoners in a timely manner, If the FEDS were trully concerned about the issue they would make it a more efficient process. I agree seal the border, enforce employer hire rules and take immediate corrective action via fines, shutting down businesses, deportations, etc. etc. Chris Cummings
