Students at Woodbridge High School held a prayer vigil this morning for a 17-year-old senior who has suffered life-threatening injuries.
Prince William County police responded to the intersection of Springwoods Drive and Trokia Court in Lake Ridge on Tuesday and found that John Meres had fallen off the rear of a 2006 Saturn Ion and struck the pavement.
The boy had jumped onto the trunk of the car, and the driver pulled away, according to Prince William Officer Erika Hernandez. Meres was flown to an area hospital.
The driver was identified as a 16-year-old girl from Woodbridge. She was charged with reckless driving and having more than one passenger in the vehicle. She will have a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Prince William police are still investigating the incident. They did not release the name of the victim, but the News & Messenger was able to discern it from an interview and from scanning pages on the social-networking site Facebook.
Classmates and friends started a Facebook page, Pray for John Meres, for people to send their thoughts and prayers. So far, 610 members have joined and 79 posts have been left.

Okay seriously what happened is ...
John was sitting on the back of this girls car. They were just driving down the street because they were going to a different girls house. The girl was going 35-40 miles an hour (which is over the speed limit). The girl in the passenger seat told the driver to swerve the car because she thought it would be funny. So of course the girl driving swerves the car. John lost his balanced and flipped off the side of the car and landed on his head. And to clear things up he wasnt standing on the car. He was just sitting on the back. The only guy in the car got out and went over to John to see if he was okay. One of the girls who was in the backseat also got out and ran to her house to get her parents. The girl in the passenger seat and the girl who was driving stayed in the car and just drove off. They left John there.
The driver was questioned by the police and she told them that he jumped on the car without her knowing and that he then jumped off when she started driving ... that didnt happen.
She was charged the other day. Im not sure what she was charged with but i know she was charged. They lessened her charges but now police found out she lied to them and she left the scene of the crime. She might be charged again with more severe punishment.
I was mistaken, that’s not what exactly happened.
I wish the best for this guy and hope he pulls through, but that was a pretty stupid thing to do.
And to save Shelby some time, I’m pretty sure he was standing on the side of the car, holding the luggage rack and standing on the step to the car. The girl who was driving the car wasn’t going fast but hit her breaks abruptly and John fell and hit his head.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.
The amount of people at the Prayer Ceremony at Woodbridge truly amazed me. There were people from different schools that showed up. This just goes to show how amazing of a person John really is. People who didn’t even know John came.
My prayers are all for John. I, along with many others, are waiting impatiently for the day we can go visit him.
Love you John
Yeah Shelbybn, the readers demand the truth!
OK Shelbybn, if you’re tired of hearing it then why wouldn’t you set it straight? Seriously then, what really happened?
Our prayers go out for John and also all the teens who were involved.
We need to get the true story out, so maybe it would help others to understand and not try any tricks. (If that was what it was) The teens are so full of life and they need to know it takes only a second to loose that life.
Our Prayers to John and all his friends.
Im so tired of hearing that he jumped on the car and then somehow fell off. That is not even what happened.
