Dryer sparks Dale City blaze

A Sunday night fire displaced a family of three in Dale City.

Fire officials say they were called to the blaze at 15010 Cordell Ave., at 7:45 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the house.

The blaze was brought under control and no one was injured, said Prince William County fire spokeswoman Kim Hylander. The American Red Cross is helping the family.

Investigators determined the fire started in a dryer in the basement.

County fire officials recommend the following safety tips when operating a major home appliance:

• Do not operate a dryer without a lint filter. Be sure to clean lint filters before or after each use and remove accumulated lint around the drum.
• Do not overload electrical outlets which can result in blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. Make sure the outlet is suitable for the appliance’s electrical needs.
• Never leave the washer, dryer or any appliance running when leaving the home.
• Keep combustibles such as boxes and clothing clear of the dryer area.
• Washers and dryers should be installed and maintained by a professional. Their components should be checked every 2-3 years or less depending on the age and condition of the appliance.
• Gas-powered dryers should be inspected annually by a professional to ensure the gas line and connections are intact.
• Avoid enclosing appliances in cabinets and other small spaces without proper openings and ventilation.

Large appliances are prone to tip; level them so they do not tip and check them often.
