Covington receives Prince William human rights award

Prince William County School Board member Betty D. Covington receives a Human Rights award from Curtis Porter, chairman of the county Human Rights Commission.

Prince William County School Board member Betty D. Covington (Dumfries) recently received a 2009 Human Rights Award from the Prince William County Human Rights Commission.

The Human Rights Commission award recognized Covington for her contributions to the town of Dumfries and her advocacy forcounty students. During her time as a teacher, assistant principal and principal at Dumfries Elementary School, she focused her efforts on the needs of her students regardless of economic status or ethnicity to ensure that they all achieved at a high level.

She has continued that focus as a member of the Prince William County School Board during her seven years repre-senting the Dumfries community.

Covington was nominated by Prince William County Schools employee Joan Ferlazzo.

"I nominated her for all of the work that she has done for the children of Prince William County," Ferlazzo said. "Mrs. Covington is very deserving of this award. She always has the student's best interest at heart."
