You can help fight cancer by walking or running at Heritage Hunt.

At 9 a.m. Sept. 26 at Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, join in the eighth annual 5K Cancer Walk/Run, the kickoff for the three-event Charity Golf Classic cancer fund raising campaign.

Every year since 2002, Heritage Hunters and the public have joined for the walk/run which starts at the clubhouse and continues for 3.1 miles through the Heritage Hunt community.

"The event brings out folks who like to cross the finish line first, whether they walk or run," said Dick Powell, who is coordinating the event. But, he added, this is not a competition. "Everyone who enters is a winner for contributing to this important cause."

Powell said a donation of $20 will get you the satisfaction of helping to defeat all forms of cancer, an exclusive commemorative T-shirt, a connection with cancer fighters and friends, refreshments donated by Giant Food, and, if you're lucky, the prize of a gift certificate from the Running Store in Gainesville.

Contributions will be compiled with those from the Heritage Hunt Casino Night and the Charity Golf Classic and be donated to the American Cancer Society, the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center of Georgetown University and the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas.

Walkers and/or runners are still needed.

"Talk this up with your friends," Powell said, calling the walk/run an "important outing where you can meet others who are committed to this important cause, take action, and have fun doing it."

Register at the Heritage Hunt Clubhouse front desk, 6901 Arthur Hills Dr., Gainesville, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or pick up a registration form at the Running Store, 7343 Atlas Walk Way, Gainesville, and mail as instructed.

Latecomers may register on the day of the event, starting at 8 a.m.

T-shirts will be issued to the first 150 registrants at the clubhouse Sept. 21 to 25 from 6 to 7 p.m., and at the clubhouse entrance at 8 a.m. Sept. 26.
