Official: Immigration crackdown pushes down crime

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) _ A Prince William County official is attributing a decline in certain types of crime last year to the county’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.

A study released last week says homicides declined by 44 percent from 2006 to 2007. The incidence of rape fell 33 percent, robberies declined 23 percent, and aggravated assaults declined 18 percent.

County board Chairman Corey Stewart says the decrease is due to the resolutions cracking down on illegal immigrants in the county.

The county first started discussing the issue last summer, though no policy changes went into effect until this year.

Nancy Lyall of the immigrant advocacy group Mexicans Without Borders says many crimes are simply going unreported now because immigrants are afraid to go to police.

Keep up the good work PW County and Manassas City. This place is looking better and better everyday. Still has a way to go but it is getting there. And as for Mexicans without Borders, “go back across the border”. It is great to see single family (legal ones) moving back into my neighborhood. I can almost feel safe to let my kids walk down to the local store again. I say almost, not just yet. Still see a few strays walking around.

I am trying to figure out how a policy that wasn’t implemented until 2008 can be used to promote decrease in 2007 numbers. Please explain it to me.

The Hispanic Community wants it both ways. They absolutely know who the illegal alien criminals are in there neighborhood but they sit by and say absolutely nothing until a crime is perpetuated against them. Then and only then do they want cooperation with the local Police. Sorry, it does not work that way. They should be working upfront to rid their community of those that have no legal right to be in the country. And why is it that the local press always sticks a microphone in front of Nancy Lyall when an immigration issues arises? When did she become the defacto subject matter expert in PW County. She is an advocate for criminal illegal aliens and has shown her true anti-American colors on many occasions. When is the JM going to come to Manassas and talk to the residents who are now seeing the positives signs attributed to the Resolution. We now have SINGLE familes moving into homes that were previously occumpied by multiple familes and day labor’s. Now that is a story but we know that would get in the way of the papers left wing open border agenda.

Great Point masterofnone. It is nearly 50% decline in murders. That alone is worth the efforts to deport people who are here illegally. Although I’m sure Mexicans without borders will try to find someway to argue this point. But only an idiot would argue against deporting criminals.

Hey Nancy…The numbers do not lie. And the statement that they are not being report is a complete fantasy made up by you and your group.  You just cannot accept the truth!!  How do homicides not go reported???

Hey Mexicans without Borders. You are going to hold on to every single argument you can but you fail to face the truth. Crime is down because there are fewer criminals on the street. Good job Manassas and Prince William!
