Program to help newly diagnosed cancer patients
Fear and frustration often accompany a diagnosis of cancer. It may also leave the person with many unanswered questions.
To help those newly diagnosed with cancer, Prince William Hospital and the American Cancer Society will sponsor a free eight-week program called I Can Cope. The program is designed to help participants cope with their cancer experience by increasing their knowledge and skills.
Conducted by healthcare personnel and speakers such as nutritionists and oncologists, topics will include information on cancer treatments, side effects, nutrition, self-esteem, intimacy, financial strategies and resources.
The session will be held Wednesday mornings from July 8 through Aug. 27 at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas, 7901 Lake Manassas Drive, Gainesville.
The dates and times are July 8 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; July 15, July 22, July 29 and Aug. 5 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; Aug. 12 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; and Aug. 19 and 26 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Though the program is free, registration is required and class size is limited. To learn more or to register, call 703-895-4857.
“We plan to hold the program three to four times a year, and the next I Can Cope program will be held this fall in the evening at Prince William Hospital,” said Robyn Phelps, co-facilitator of the program.
“Cancer patients and their families face many challenges, and the unknown can be frightening,” Phelps said. “This provides education to empower them to deal with their cancer experience.”
