Portions of U.S. 1 at the Stafford / Prince William County line are under water Sunday night, as traffic is being turned around near Boswell's Corner

Virginia Department of Transportation crews putting up road closure signs said the flooding has risen to at least 2 feet, and has spilled over the roadway.

"I've been sitting her for about 40 minutes now and they won't let me go any further, and this area is too small to turn this truck around," said Floyd Piner, a truck driver who was attempting to deliver his load to Hilldrup Moving and Storage less than a mile north of the flooding.

Mark Stone with Stafford Fire and Rescue says multiple areas of the county are experiencing flooding.

"We have multiple road closures… pretty much anything that is low-lying in the county is under water right now," Stone said.

The bulk of the heavy rain is over the northeastern section of Virginia, moving slowly into Southern Maryland, said Trina Hesser with the National Weather Service.

A flood watch remains in effect for the area until Monday afternoon, as another 1 to 2 inches of additional rainfall are expected for Stafford and Prince William counties.

Wind will also be an issue, with gusts up to 45 mph expected overnight, Hesser said.
