Interstate 95 widening lane closures of the week of Oct. 4

When:  Oct. 5-8, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

What: Two lanes closed

Where: I-95 north, from the U.S. 1 on ramp to the Pohick Road overpass

Why: Milling and paving for traffic shift

Police: Onsite for motorist safety

When: Oct. 8, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.(Back up night Oct. 13)

What: Ramp closed

Where: I-95 north, at Exit 163, Lorton Road (Va. 642)

Why: Milling and overlay asphalt pavement

I-95 South Night Work

When: Oct. 4, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

What: Two right lanes closed*

Where: I-95 south, from Exit 163, Lorton Road (Va. 642) to Exit 160, Gordon Boulevard (Va. 123)

Why: Overhead sign work

Police: Onsite for motorist safety

*Expect intermittent full roadway closures no longer than 30 minutes beginning after midnight.

I-95 HOV night work

When: Oct. 4, 11:30 p.m. to 4 a.m.

What: Intermittent full roadway stoppages*

Where: I-95 HOV, from Exit 160, Gordon Boulevard (Va. 123) to Exit 163, Lorton Road (Va. 642)

Why: Overhead sign work

Police: Onsite for motorist safety

*Expect intermittent full roadway closures no longer than 30 minutes beginning after midnight.

I-95 North day work

When: Oct. 5-8, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

What: Right lane closed

Where: I-95 north from the U.S. 1 to Exit 166, Fairfax County Parkway (Va. 7100)

Why: Bridge and wall work

I-95 South day work

When: Oct. 5-8, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What: Right lane closed

Where: I-95 south from Exit 166, Fairfax County Parkway (Va. 7100) to Exit 160, Gordon Boulevard (Va. 123)

Why: Bridge work, clearing and grubbing

I-95 HOV day work

When:  Oct. 5-8, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

What: Single lane closed

Where: I-95 HOV from Exit 163, Lorton Road (Va. 642) to Exit 160, Gordon Boulevard (Va. 123)

Why: Setting barriers and overhead sign work

VDOT is adding a fourth general purpose lane to I-95 in each direction from Route 123 just before the Occoquan River to the Fairfax County Parkway. The agency said this will relieve chronic bottlenecking and improve traffic flow to and from the Springfield Interchange. Construction of the six-mile widening project began in early 2008 and will be completed by late fall 2011.
