Gray Column: Let’s not elect people based on gotcha

» 28 Comments | Post a Comment

Here we go again. Another political campaign and another poor attempt at gotcha politics. This time it is happening in the Virginia governor’s race.

Last week the Washington Post released a story about a thesis written by Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell back in 1989.

In the thesis the Post highlights a few of McDonnell’s more conservative views that are thought to be controversial. The views touched on a variety of issues including marriage, women, abortion,
contraceptives and various others.

Not going too deep into what was in the thesis, I would say that his comments are more to the social conservative viewpoint.

State Senator Creigh Deeds, who is the Democratic candidate for governor, wasted no time in criticizing McDonnell for the thesis, saying it, “explains the social agenda that has apparently driven his
[McDonnell’s] legislative agenda during the years.”

Senator Deed’s running mate, Jody Wagner, who is running for lieutenant governor, emphasized her beliefs about Mr. McDonnell as well. “Bob McDonnell is asking Virginians to elect him Governor. But in
Bob McDonnell’s Virginia, me, my friends, my colleagues, and my own mother aren’t viewed as equals.”  Three paragraphs after that she asked Web visitors to join Women for Deeds.

First, let me say I don’t fault the Washington Post for looking for this thesis. The people have a right to know, and they have a right to look.

I didn’t read the entire report — it’s 93-plus pages in all — but I did take the time to read the eight page introduction. In my opinion there were some valid, well thought out points mentioned about the
alarming divorce rate in our community and some concerns about the decline in respect for authority in America.

I could easily argue that these are valid points and that 20 years later we are dealing with real world consequences related to the issues McDonnell’s thesis discussed.

But let’s refocus on the political intent hear. Other than the discovery of some controversial statements, the insinuation that this man is anti woman is wrong and the idea that his views on handling social
issues are dangerous is debatable. Hopefully as the election season goes on the issues will be debated.

We have been down this road before. Anyone remember Senator Allen’s macaca moment and the research paper dug up on then-candidate Jim Webb? They left us thinking the only choice we had for
U.S. Senate was between a racist or a person who had no respect for women.  Both insinuations were wrong.

Its time to stop being childish and focus on the real issues here in Virginia. Our state is so broke we can’t afford to keep our highway rest areas open. Yet, candidates running for the highest offices in the
state have time to take political jabs based on a 20-year-old, 93-page thesis paper.

As I mentioned in my column last week, people aren’t trusting government to do anything and examples like this are the reason why. One side tears the other down to look like they are the only logical
choice.  In the end, voters make the only logical choice they can make by not showing up to vote. That is evident by the fact that 36 percent of the people showed up to vote in the 2005 statewide
elections.

I am sure that both gubernatorial candidates are looking for that edge or that political gotcha moment, when if nothing else you can bloody up the opposition just a little bit.

But in the end it hurts the process and ultimately hurts our Republic form of Democracy. Again, that 36-percent voter turn out speaks for itself.

And anyone who thinks I am being partisan about this, guess again.  I remember last year writing about how badly Barack Obama was treated by people in his own party who were trying to link him with
his controversial Pastor Jeremiah Wright, or when radio talk show hosts decided to make finding then-Senator Obama’s birth certificate to show he wasn’t American a priority.

The process of electing someone — and how we act in that process — is as important as selecting the right candidate. Why? Because selecting the right candidate is debatable based upon what your
political views are. Plus, concentrating on insinuations and the unproven trivializes the importance of issues we face as a state and nation.

By the way, I would highly suggest everyone go and read Mr. McDonnell’s thesis, since it has been brought up, and then you can be the judge. It is available online or you can e-mail me and I would be
glad to send it to you.

“China has long since passed her “socialism” stage”

Ron, you just can’t stop providing proof after proof of your own ignorance while calling others ignorant.

You sound like you are reading from “Pravda” or some other Russian newspaper from the past… and you make it sound like socialism is a real blessing for the Chinese people.

I wonder where this ridiculous “expertise” of yours comes from when it comes to socialism.

And since the leftist websites propaganda doesn’t count - I bet your wives are the only source…

“Per the Wash Post yesterday, McDonnell ...........”
phdee
How fast is the Washington Post doing “research” about conservative republicans , I guess   Candidate Deeds will pass over warm water with no scrutiny from the left, this is how Obama won the election. Now al the Van Jones are coming out from the dark . This is all mumbo-jumbo from the left . Deeds has no plan, now in order to get support from the youth offer to 50% of tuition in exchange for community service , what else he is going to get more votes, free convicted from jail, like Tim Kaine ? ...what a joke you have for candidate.

Godsaver:

Per the Wash Post yesterday, McDonnell has had his 2003 legislative record reviewed concerning an alleged harassment case of a worker, and McDonnell’s remarks in 2003 seem to fit nicely with those he made in his thesis 20 yers ago. Get ov3er it…McDonnell is a major kook. He may run on transportation and education, but once elected, he will switch to his thesis beliefs—- a Bobby G. Marshall’S tactic on abortion.

McDonnell’s reply to the 2003 behavior and vote was that this election was not about that.  (Wait til election results are in, then observe—- if he is elected.)

Thanks for asking vmj
I have to say that there is something in common among socialist here in USA and there in Peru, they are against the rich people, they are against big corporations , they are in favor of more taxation,  wealth distribution, big government, they promote strong labor unions, yes there are many similarities in the way that Obama’s and his fellas i.e. Van Jones think about “change”. That is why I am against Obama and his policies. However we are living in democracy and most Americans do not fall in love with socialism so I guess they wont go to far.
Before I come back to USA the socialist dictatorship was take over for a moderate group of generals that call for democratic elections. The new democratic government that support capitalism and free market start the privatization of all industries, given the opportunity to more investors bring more money and bring the economy back. Now after more than 20 years there is a solid economic growth that reflect in the GDP. In 2008 president Bush sign a free trade agreement with the opposition of group of democrats and pro labor unions between both countries USA and Peru after they meet the conditions for such agreement..

Godsaveus How interesting to hear someone who actually lived the history and know the results.

Do you see any relationship between what you have experienced and what the United States is going through now?

“But you folks wouldn’t know anything about any of that”
No old man
I am witness of an alliance between Russia and Peru to promote a socialist government under the rule of a military dictatorship in the 1970. With the help of labor union they start taking over the industry, giving ownership to the workers up to 49% , it kill the private industry, they also start an Agricultural reform , giving the land to the workers and leaving only a 10% to the owners, they did the same in health, mining,  it was censorship in the media, the school start teaching about the great philosophers , Lenin, Marx. 10 years after the country was in bankruptcy thanks to the socialist government and Russia. So please do not pretend to teach about something you never witness.

Scorpio,

Don’t know why it matters - but since you asked; my first wife was a Filipino immigrant.  She grew up under the reign of right-wing dictator Ferdinand Marcos.  You might remember him - he was close friends of former president Reagan, who once called Marcos a great friend of Democracy.  This was long after Marcos declared martial law and was ruling as a dictator.

Besides suspending all civil rights (in the name of restoring law and order) Marcos looted the country by giving no bid contracts to his friends and extended family.  Under Marcos, human rights groups place the number of victims of extrajudicial killings under martial law at 1500 people and Karapatan, a local human rights group, have records that show 759 people involuntarily disappeared (their bodies never found).

He did a lot of other things, also, that I won’t discuss here.  My first wife didn’t even understand the concept of free speech when she first arrived in the US; watching a newscast one night, she heard a newscaster typically criticizing then-President Reagan and asked me if the newscaster was going to be arrested.

You, and other tools, who post here have very little personal understandings of where the right-wing elements of this country want to take us.  You also have no clue what “Socialism” is all about.  Just for starters - China has long since passed her “socialism” stage. The country is presently a one-party government that favors corporatists; the government puts big business interests over those of the public, which leads to disasters like contaminated foods and toys containing lead paints being imported into this country.

It was while China was “socialist” that public education and public health care was made available to all, and large-scale public works brought electricity and clean water to many rural areas for the first time.  Today, many of those programs are fading from lack of government support.

But you folks wouldn’t know anything about any of that.

Ron, was your first wife Chinese too or…?

And how did you like the Chinese socialism so much that you want to bring it over here in the states?

I am not so acquainted with McCain’s motives to divorce his first wife…

... but I see your facts about McCain’s second wife are coming straight from the spring of truth.

Roncharest wrote “.........She was dumped for a rich ketchup heiress who financed McCain’s senate career, whom McCain respects so much he once referred to her as a B&%ch in public.”
One more time ronny charest your vitriolic hateful comments are far from the truth . The queen of the Ketchup and Mustard and Mayonnaise is Mrs. Heinz , John Kerry’s wife , who help him with millions in his presidential campaign. If you can’t speak with the facts better get off….  Old Man.
This is a new beginning of the dirty war that democrats play well, they condemn Bob McDonnell for a thesis made more than 20 years ago   but is OK to have Senator Byrd an ex Ku Klux Klan leader as a ranking member in the Senate and Senator Webb who made sexist comments about woman in the Navy.
