Investigations will set students far behind
In the column by Ms. Oppenhagen she refers to the process of “regurgitating memorized facts.” That is a total misrepresentation of the traditional math approach. Students learn to add and then practice. They put the pieces together by doing it.
Viable public transit already exists
Davon Gray’s Feb. 25 editorial, “Forget Dulles — what about us?” recounts the misery of freezing rain gridlocking thousands of commuters at the Springfield Interchange.
Colgan responds to letter writer
I am responding to a letter dated Feb. 20, where the writer claimed I have not followed through on promises made during my campaign as they relate to the gas tax and illegal immigration.

Senator Colgan should resign
Is Sen. Charles J. “Chuck” Colgan, D-Manassas, corrupt? Well, he certainly lacks integrity.
Illegal: Nothing more and nothing less
Illegal’s are just that. Nothing more, nothing less. No one deserves a home in our country unless and until the proper procedures are complied with.

New elementary school is needed in Nokesville
Ms. Spillane would have you believe that if we build this new school it would be the end of our wonderful Nokesville community.
Is anybody learning the proper lessons?
Well I guess no one is learning lessons from all these random shootings that are taking place in our country.
Constant divisiveness in the community
So what in the world is wrong with new math? It is better and faster than the old way.
New schools needed, but not in Nokesville
We don’t need a new elementary school in Nokesville.
Honoring the leaders that stand among us
Congratulations to Gainesville District Supervisor John Stirrup for being recognized as a “Leader Among Us” by the new national magazine, Town Hall.

A company goes above and beyond its call
It is always a welcome feeling knowing that a company provides the service it says it will, but when you find one that goes above and beyond, that is a rarity.
Redundant regulations are not necessary
There seems to be a pattern forming: Sue Fleming’s Feb. 24, 2008 letter advocating the establishment of laws to regulate the City of Manassas’ one abortion clinic mirrors those letters that have been published by your paper on a regular basis.
Today there is a new type of apathy
In the past, many of us have felt apathetic in presidential races because neither candidate was inspiring. When it came down to the robotic Al Gore versus the thick George W. Bush, who do you choose?
Senator Colgan is a great disappointment
Sen. Charles J. “Chuck” Colgan, D-Manassas, was handily re-elected to the state Senate last November, but several of his recent actions call into question whether the voters made a wise choice.
Never forget Jose M. Cavazo’s sacrifice
The picture and staff report about the ceremony to honor fallen State Trooper Jose M. Cavazos is much appreciated.
Saudi Arabia is no genuine ally of U.S.
I read with interest in the Feb. 2008 issue of Scientific American under education on page 18 the article “Arabian Brainpower.”

A wonderful, local theater experience
I am writing this letter in response to a wonderful experience I had at the local level. My daughter and I went to a local play last night at the A.J. Ferlazzo building and I was utterly amused the entire time.
Women deserve the safest conditions with abortions
Abortion being a risky business (there is a victim in every abortion), do not women deserve the safest possible conditions under which these procedures are performed?
No putz here; put shopping carts away
When I look into my American Heritage College dictionary (Third Edition), I also see the meaning stated to be “A fool; an idiot” as well. In my opinion, someone too lazy to put their shopping cart in a safe place, is a putz.
Spillane doesn’t speak for all of Nokesville
I am writing this in response to the letter written on Feb. 19 by Laura Spillane,“New elementary school not needed in Nokesville.”
Torture goes against our societal values
What is wrong when the president, CIA director and the attorney general think some torture may be OK? Answer: The fact it goes against the Western, Judeo-Christian and ancient Greek philosophic and cultural underpinning values of our society.
Good deeds no excuse for illegal behavior
“Illegal immigrants contribute an estimated $400 million to Virginia’s economy annually in taxes, according to a study released Thursday by a group hoping to counter some anti-illegal immigrant sentiment in the legislature.”
This is the first paragraph of a recent article printed in the Potomac News.

Don’t close the libraries on Sundays
While visiting the Chinn Park Regional Library I was told that the library board intends to recommend to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors that all libraries be closed on Sundays in order to eliminate a budget deficit.
Incumbents shouldn’t run for office? Silly
This letter is in response to the “Our Opinion” editorial, “Stick around Stewart,” of Feb. 19.
Letter writer is sickened indeed
Regarding the letter, “Illegal alien championing is sickening to reader” of Feb. 17.

Obama’s talk isn’t even his own
I have been concerned all along that Barack Obama was more talk then action. Now we find that even the talk is not his own.
Marty Nohe’s support for illegal aliens
Supervisor Marty Nohe appears to support business licenses for illegal alien business owners.
Writer adds thoughts on traffic SNAFU
I would like to add my opinion to the countless opinions on what happened last week during the double SNAFU of the traffic debacle and the Virginia Primary State Board of Election decisions that were made that ultimately caused the three people in our car pool to miss exercising our right to vote.
A soothing session of soul settling melodies
By invitation I attended the Prince William Symphony Orchestra concert at the Metz Auditorium on Feb. 9. Wonderful.
