A sarcastic thanks for clearing our community

» 47 Comments | Post a Comment

I am a 17-year-old caucasian girl who has lived in Manassas my whole life. I just want to say thank you for allowing the white, self-righteous and supremacist legal citizens of this fine, upstanding county
to once again have the important jobs back, like fast food and construction. I know it has always been my dream to work the drive through at my neighborhood McDonald’s and now you have made that
dream more possible. I am so proud to be a part of a city that is taking a stand against those pesky brown people. I was riding in the car with my Hawaiian friend when we got pulled over so the nice
policeman could make sure she wasn’t an illegal Latina. I know that in my heart I couldn’t be more thankful for those new laws that you helped pass to racially profile everyone with dark skin.  Gee, I don’t
even know why I’m friends with her.

I know that no one who eats tacos and burritos can be a good person. I mean hey, I don’t want that new Chipotle on Liberia Avenue! These people just need to go back to Mexico and take their children.
They deserve to starve, be in constant danger, and have a poor education.

After all, they were born in an inferior country! I don’t want any new customs in my life.

I want to be closed-minded and be surrounded by my pasty friends forever. Please get that diversity away from me!

Now people say that all Americans immigrated here. Well that may be true, but at least all of mine spoke English when they came here! Oh wait… except for my Danish, French, and German relatives.
But no matter, at least it wasn’t Spanish. When I was in high school and I was trying to learn another language, I had the hardest time and struggled through all three years. I hardly remember any of that
language,  but who cares? Learning a second language may be really hard for anyone, but it doesn’t matter if your first language was English.

Now I look around my upper middle-class neighborhood and see that there are far fewer children for my neighbors to play with. But I rest assured knowing that when they play tag, they won’t get tagged
by Latino cooties anymore.

Next, we should give them disease-infested blankets; it worked when we wanted to get rid of Native Americans.

Thank you once again for your efforts to cleanse our community,

SUZIE ESKELUND

Miss Eskelund’s comment is a pure example of the racist sentiment in the mind of supremacists or conservatives however you want to call it, Miss, I don’t think you are 17 by the xenophobic remarks you make or probably you were writing while C. Stewart was standing next to you telling you what to write, word by word. but anyways, hope you enjoy your isolated life away from browns, blacks, yellows, and native Americans, and ofcourse, your job at McDonald’s!. too bad you don’t live in our society.

MikeG, the very nature of this forum often requires us to take extreme positions on the issues discussed - if only to counter the extreme position offered by another. My bet would be if we sat down for a beer, most (oh yes I say most) of us would find common ground to agree on. The very fact that we’re here offering opinions is that we care about our community. And thanks for the compliment, I do appreciate it.

Hey MikeG,

While I appreciate the (grudging) compliment, I suspect you really don’t want to pick a fight with this young lady.  Given the way she wrote this LTE, I suspect she’s more than capable of taking care of herself…And insulting her like this will do nothing to convince her a Conservative viewpoint is superior to a Liberal viewpoint.

Anonmom,

You’re definitely out of your league taking on this young lady.  Quit while you’re (barely) ahead.

“conservatism is for the experienced, and wise.“

Read: old and fearful of new fangled change.  Like you young whippersnappers with your internets and ipods.

Fortunately for the rest of us, experienced and wise conservatives like Jesse Helms just fade away, and change happens anyway.

In 2007 the immigrant population both legal and illegal was 37.9 million, out of those the Center for Immigration Studies show that only 1/3 of those are illegal aliens.  So with some simple math that comes to 12.6 million illegal and 25.2 million legal.  If as you both imply that the system is broken then how might you explain that 25,200,000 immigrants were able to be in the U.S. legally?  And as far as the statement, “The immigration system we are laboring with today is not my Grandparents’ immigration system.” the CIS says that just in the last 7 years 5 million immigrants came into the US legally.  So if the system is broken how did they do that?  I claim that the process is not broken at all but flat out ignored by 1/3 of the immigrant population.  Just because some immigrants choose to ignore this process and break the law, a process mind you that has worked for millions of immigrants, because of this disregard for the process I should be labeled a racist?  I don’t think so.

Young lady, I think it’s commendable that you’ve taken the time to participate in matters that will impact your future.  Young people may yet swing a vote to the Dems this fall, in some districts.  But your post—and it doesn’t surprise me that none of the liberal regulars on this space made any comment about this—raised a serious question, related either to your own liberalism, or possibly to a general misunderstanding of the issues.

Now I KNOW you didn’t mean to imply that you are too good to take a job slinging burgers at McDonald’s.  After all, you imply, only illegal aliens are good enough for that sort of work—e.g., all those nasty little jobs that Americans like you (and supposedly the rest of us, you imply) are unwilling to do.  Or are you merely attempting to demonstrate your facility with the expression of irony?  Oops; you missed.

How utterly elitist of you, Miss.  When you take a summer job, what do YOU do?  Get an internship at daddy’s firm?  Volunteer to go off to Peru (at daddy’s expense) to help the locals grow beans?  Stand out in the middle of 234 in a bikini selling car washes to your boyfriends and leering old men?

Your letter may have been intended as ironic humor, but it came across, really, as the writings of someone who is really only just beginning to find her voice, without the benefit of any depth of knowledge or experience.  People your age tend toward idealism and liberalism, which I can understand since I was much the same way as a youth myself.  But several wars, a long career defending this country from external threats, and lots of seasoning has helped me realize that liberalism and idealism is essentially for the young; conservatism is for the experienced, and wise. (can’t wait to hear Charest and Williams respond to THAT!)

If you want to be a liberal pundit, I suggest you follow the example of a couple of others here - Ron Charest and Ray Williams (he said, with grudging respect).  While I rarely agree with anything either one has to say, at least I admit that they have the ability to tie their liberal ideals together with logical arguments.

“...my upper middle-class neighborhood”
Spoken like a truly elitist, snotty brat who thinks service jobs belong to immigrants and are far beneath her. While it’s great that she took the time to express her opinion, and that she has a good command of her language, her very limited and misinformed perspective at 17 makes her “sarcasm” fall flat on its face. I wonder how many flophouses she had in her “upper-middle-class” neighborhood?

AntiBVBL.net,

You are absolutely correct in stating that our system is broken.  The entire “illegal is illegal” meme is so infuriating to me simply because it has become nearly impossible for ANY foreign-born person to “legally” gain so much as a US tourist visa, let alone a residency visa with work permit.

The immigration system we are laboring with today is not my Grandparents’ immigration system.  The “illegal is illegal” crowd either doesn’t care, or doesn’t know and isn’t interested in learning.  The entire PWC BOCS approach is deliberately designed to give the racists among us an avenue to legally practice discrimination while claiming the moral high ground of “enforcing our laws.“

Ms Eskelund gets it.  NewsJunky either does not, or doesn’t want to.

I whole-heartedly disagree that there is clearly a process in place for those that wish to become legal.  Did you hear about the United States Soldier, who by the way is a purple heart recipient who is suing the government for his citizenship?
I’m tired of hearing generations past stating come here legally like my grandparents did.  Do they not realize how broken the system is?  That generation was able to win a world war in 4 years!  Ours can’t find Bin Laden and it’s been 7 LONG YEARS!  Open your eyes FOLKS, it’s not just the enforcement part that’s out of whack, it’s the whole darn SYSTEM.

And, thanks again for writing the letter!

I appreciate sarcasm as much as the next person and I applaud your thoughtfulness of a person of such a young age, I know when I was 17 I did not have ˝ your wit or maturity when it came to matters such as this.  However I must take to task and say that I think that your jabs of humor are off target.  If you are aiming at the police well their duty is to uphold the law so it surely can not be aimed at them, if aim is at the law itself then so it must be at the law makers, but even then the law makers have clearly put in place a process for those who want to become US citizens to go through.  And I must say that I find no prejudice in the process and know a couple people that have went through it and became US citizens so I know it can be done. In short, using sarcasm to paint society racist just because we have laws that reinforce processes is a bit dramatic and misguided to say the least.
