LETTER: Miller is the right choice in 50th

» 64 Comments | Post a Comment

Citizens of the 50th House District are being asked to choose between a candidate with a long history of service to others and a candidate who has zero history of public service. Jackson Miller has
served in the Armed Forces, as a Police Officer, as a City Councilman, and as a House Delegate. Jeanette Rishell has served as nothing.  This should be enough to show Jackson is the only logical
candidate, but wait there is more!!

Mrs. Rishell has constantly stretched the truth in her ads.  This got her a rebuke from this paper the last election cycle, and yet she continues to do so.  She recently handed out a flyer stating that she
was endorsed by the Virginia Education Association. She was NOT; Del. Miller was! The Association should consider legal action against her.

Jackson Miller has sought to reach bipartisan support to achieve the objectives of the 50th district. He has sought to strengthen our schools, security, and economic outlook. There is only one clear
choice; it is Del. Jackson Miller!

“I am that man.  Please elect me!“

LOL Sorry….

“It will take a president willing to veto every spending bill that crosses their desk with pork - or let the government run out of money until the right bill crosses.
It will take a president that caters to America - and not to special interest groups or those with a covert agenda.“

Bloomberg is really, really super rich.  Doesn’t need anyone else’s money. Hmm, this may be just the ticket. All the right credentials, yes I think you’ve got it nailed.  Bloomberg it is.

Sure hope he’s reading this….

“Well ray, I have the sinking feeling we are in for a long ride, unless someone gets out there and motivates the masses and NOT by bribing but by persuasion.  Someone we can look up to and believe who does not have a personal agenda but one of altruism. Time and a belief in ourselves.“

Look out beyond the horizon, the only glimmer of hope I see is Mark Warner or perhaps Mike Bloomberg.

It will take a president willing to veto every spending bill that crosses their desk with pork - or let the government run out of money until the right bill crosses.

It will take a president that caters to America - and not to special interest groups or those with a covert agenda.

I am that man.  Please elect me!

When our options are Slim and None, as they were in this presidential election, we can only hope for the best possible outcome with the insane running the asylum.

“My employees lead a simple life.  Get up in the morning, go bang nails, feed their family and go to bed.
No greater expectation than to have a roof over their head, transportation to work and perhaps the occasional dinner out.“

To put it another way, they are busy living life.  I get that.  Until fairly recently, we were doing the same.  Too busy to be interested in anything, really no time for anything but working, make a living, save a little.

“Somewhere it was written that “There but for the grace of God go I”.“

When things look bad it’s always good to purge yourself by seeing some less fortunate and getting back to the reality of knowing you have it pretty darn good.

Well ray, I have the sinking feeling we are in for a long ride, unless someone gets out there and motivates the masses and NOT by bribing but by persuasion.  Someone we can look up to and believe who does not have a personal agenda but one of altruism. Time and a belief in ourselves.

Have you bought a new car ray or did you avail yourself of the cash for clunkers?  If not are you going to help out by purchasing a new vehicle?

Your men are like everyone else in this mess,  hanging on by their fingertips and hoping for the best.  The problem is when the government starts to hand out freebees then the freebees stop, everything stops.  Now all, who could be out spending for cars, houses and Christmas are holding out for the next round of freebees. The cycle never ends, but it has to sometime then, what next?

Government complicates everything, especially the federal government.  I have seen it time and time again.  About every 10 years or so the preverbal stuff hits the fan.

I know we will be ok even through there are people feeling hopeless, it is never hopeless unless we give up and that isn’t the American way….

“This confidence in America has to come from the American people and their belief in the American way of free enterprise. Businesses fail and from their ashes, new life.“

Your thoughts are 100% correct and I support them fully - and yet, they will not lead our country out of the current economic quagmire we find ourselves in without making the quagmire worse in the meantime.

I don’t know how to convey any better these are real people facing real crisis and the cost of doing nothing is greater than the cost of doing something.  Perhaps not the something we are currently doing - but something regardless.

The answer of course is a blend of the two ideals - SOME assistance for those willing to help themselves and NO assistance for those seeking just a handout.

I keep returning to the fact that those that are secure financially do not quite grasp the situation of those not secure financially - many and most not of their own making.

My employees lead a simple life.  Get up in the morning, go bang nails, feed their family and go to bed.

No greater expectation than to have a roof over their head, transportation to work and perhaps the occasional dinner out.

They have no say in the actions of Congress and they ride their same boat through rough seas and calm.  Yet, they are in danger of drowning because someone outside their control decided to knock a hole in the bottom of their modest boat so the money changer might purchase a yacht.

Somewhere it was written that “There but for the grace of God go I”.

Something we should all keep in mind for the duration of this crisis.

The fact is the fish is either fresh from the head down or rotten.  Get rid of waste, reduce government.  Use to be the exception, now the rule.
We need to get back to basics.

Votes or no votes, it’s time politicians ‘clean up’ their act and the only way that will happen is if WE insist on it or they’re out.

This confidence in America has to come from the American people and their belief in the American way of free enterprise. Businesses fail and from their ashes, new life.

Freedom, this is what we represent, this is what we are….

vmj, in the old days I had problems with waste on the job site.  New 2x4 cut when a suitable 4’ scrap was in the next room etc.

At that time, I was providing sodas, water and pizza upon occasion for the guys.

One day I took 2x4s, boxes of nails and whatever and beside those items laid out their dollar value in soda cans, pizza boxes, tools and such.

Say a box of nails left outside in the rain was worth 3 pizzas at lunch time.

They got the message.  You waste my nails, you buy your own pizza!

Controlling waste in any system is easy if that is the message sent from ‘above’.  You just have to find ways to make people understand how their actions equals waste - and how that affects their well-being.

Our government - any party - does not communicate that message because that does not win votes back on the home turf.

What wins votes is bringing money back to the home turf - see Robert Byrd WVA for a clearer picture.

If Obama is going to make a difference, he has to ‘step up’ and stop letting congress run the country.  It’s his presidency, he name on the line, his legacy.

Personally, I hope he can make a difference, but I have to say, I have my doubts.  So far, he has been a big disappointment.  Nothing would make me happier than to say I was wrong….

“Do you think he has the courage to do that?“

I’ve said from day one that he’ll make his own bed by his actions.

He has an opportunity to be a hero or a zero.  What I won’t do is throw him under the bus until I’ve seen the results of HIS actions - and not the remaining fall-out of the previous Administration.

Hence, my 12 month no-bashing policy.

“And your suggestion is to keep throwing money away over and over until when, the country magically comes back and we all start to sing ‘happy days are here again?“

Can you carry a tune?

As you say, there is no good answer.  But I DO believe the government has to throw some money at the problem in order to spark the economy and also to protect jobs in fields where recovery is possible or failure is devastating.

What would I do?  I would first send a message that the country is in deep doo, and that we’re all in this together.  I would make sure the Haves understand they are part of the solution, and not just interested spectators watching the plight of the Have Nots.

I would project an image of lean times and find ways to reduce spending on a government level on any program not directly tied to economic recovery.

Perhaps a 10% reduction across the board on every government agency - White House and Congress included.

I would cut our losses in Afghanistan and Iraq - or demand the money Bush promised us from Iraqi oil revenues to stay and maintain a presence.

I would certainly tell the banker and any others on the government dole that yes, we control your salary and bonuses.  You don’t like it?  Pay us back and re-enter the free market as you wish.

On health care, I would focus on the changes that are quick, relatively free or low-cost such as Tort Reform, accepting pre-existing conditions and allowing small businesses to band together to form associations to increase their buying power.

My focus - perhaps my bias considering my industry - would be on stopping foreclosures where people WANT to remain in their home.  I fully support the tax credit for first time home buyers.  I believe the housing industry is the backbone of the US economy - new homes, old homes, remodeling, maintenance of, mortgages, and so forth.  Housing employees a lot of people in a lot of different fields.

I would also require a payback of government monies invested when possible.  If we help someone refinance a $400k home for $250k, I want a government lien on that home until the value reaches $400k again to prevent the owner from cashing out when the value goes from $250k to $350k on our nickel.

vmj, I talk to many people every day across the income board.  Wealthy homeowners still doing projects, those debating whether to replace a roof or just patch it until spring and those living with one bathroom because they can’t afford to fix a toilet.

Construction workers in all trades. Construction suppliers of tools, materials, vehicles wondering how long they can keep their doors open - and then the ‘immune’- my customers - government workers, retirees and others in protected jobs or industries, usually older folks that are in more stable industries and have lower debt because they purchased their home for $125k in 1975.

These are the people that don’t yet understand there is a crisis going on out there - and yes, they will be affected if we just ‘sit on our hands and wait’.

Allowing the full collapse of the economy will take unemployment to an easy 30%, increase the depth of the crisis and greatly slow the recovery time.

Foreclosures will trickle into your neighborhood - I have one in mine now for the first time - crime will increase as people become more desperate and frustrated, families will break up due to fights and relocation to grab any job possible, it can get far uglier if the government doesn’t inject some money to cool the fires.

So - is Obama doing everything right?  No, not in my opinion.  Is Obama doing everything wrong?  Again no, not in my opinion.

We will never know the results of the path not taken, and we will never know the positives of the path that has been taken.  All we can see are the cold numbers posted on the board - which at this time are negative numbers.

Will naysayers give Obama credit when the unemployment rate comes back down? When the auto industry emerges leaner and more competitive?  When unemployment DOESN’T hit 30%?

My guess is no.  Those that hate Obama hate him for his social views, not for his economic policies.

“Either Republican Bush is responsible as our sitting president at the time, or Congress - which was a Republican majority during the 6 years leading up to the implosion — is responsible.“

No ray, WE are responsible.  The American people for letting the federal government get this big.

Obama is not going to fix anything, WE have to fix it and not with stimulus or incentives but with putting an end to the stranglehold the federal government has on the American way of life.  42,000 in subsidies for 1st time home owners, 24,000 in subsidies for car’s, yes what a bargain.

No amount of money is going to get this country going, it’s just going to take time and we only have ourselves to blame for it.  Not one party or another.

When I first started commenting of these threads I complained about the ‘pigeon holing’ most of you do.  Republican this and Democrat that, it’s infantile and limits your ability to think for yourselves.  Like slaves to an ideology.  Automaton is the most insulting adjective I can think of and yet many of you are.  So sad, intellects waisted!

I read much more than post and I have to say, my observation is that of respect for the intelligence and wit of most of these commenters.  Yet people seem to get stuck like a needle in the worn out grove of the same old record.

“My take?  I think the president sets the tone for the country and is overall responsible for what happens under their watch.“

You’re correct on this one.  My advice, Obama should be as upbeat as he can be, encourage the American people, stop the spending of OUR money, reduce the bloated size of government, fire his czar’s, replace undesirables with people of integrity, in other words clean house.  Show, by example, how a real president governs and surrounds himself with people we can look up to.  Maybe then, just maybe he will end up to be the greatest president this country has ever known.

Absent of that, we, the American people are on our own.  Both parties have shown they are not to be trusted.  Obama’s in the cat bird seat.  He can make a difference, he just has to step out of the mold of his making and step up to the plate.

Do you think he has the courage to do that?
