LETTER: Nichols’ arrest is still relevant
Published: October 20, 2009
The fact that charges were dropped and the record expunged in Paul Nichols 2006 arrest says nothing about his conduct and judgment during the incident. Mr. Nichols says he was the victim of police
misconduct.
This raises the following questions: Did he file a complaint? Was there an investigation? Was officer misconduct substantiated? Was the officer disciplined? Did the officer or department apologize? An
affirmative answer to these would make this incident irrelevant and entitle Mr. Nichols to an apology from Mr. Anderson. This incident happened three years ago and a little investigative reporting should be
able to ascertain the facts.
Mr. Nichols says he has a witness to the officer misconduct, shouldn’t we hear what the arresting officer has to say? Again a little newspaper work to get at the facts. As to the release of Mr. Nichols
Social Security Number, the block for SSN on the arrest report is blank; if Mr. Nichols SSN appears on the report, it was your editorial and his campaign that revealed that fact. Maybe Mr. Nichols is a
victim, and if the facts support that he’s owed an apology, but sometimes good and intelligent people allow their ego to cloud their judgment and they end up in handcuffs in the back of a police cruiser.
Good reporting, not a water carrying editorial, can tell us the rest of the story.

Nichol’s arrest is irrelevant. Not guilty unless convicted. This is still America isn’t it?
You Republicans are amazing. Just amazing. Any trick in the book to win.
Mr. Anderson should be very ashamed of himself for using an out of state arrest report that never led to a conviction. Is that the best he can do? What does Anderson have going for himself? Obviously very little.
The arrest is relevant only to die-hard Republicans—the smear artists. Why did they omit so much information? Wouldn’t have been as sensational, would it?
Mr. Dixom,
While most of your LTE is typical Conservative drivel, I actually agree with this:
“a little investigative reporting should be able to ascertain the facts. “
However, investigative reporting would require an actual media outlet such as, say, a local newspaper, to perform an act of real journalism. Hard to find such media outlets now-a-days. maybe we can get some bloggers to check it out?
I believe Anderson’s pending arrest is even more relevant.
Delegate Nichols,
The dark cloud hanging over your campaign will only disappear until you tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth!
