LETTER: Time to protect our borders

» 4 Comments | Post a Comment

With the current situations in Iraq/Pakistan/Afghanistan and the current Mexican Drug Gang activities in this country, IT IS TIME for us to bring our military home and protect our own borders.

It would be nice to have the current political candidates discuss/present their positions on those issues.

It would also be nice to have opinions and suggestions from reader’s as related to those subjects.

Are you suggesting that we pull our troops out of these war zones and bring them home to stand along the Mexican border?  To take on the street gangs we have here in the US?

Do we really need our military to handle this?  To become border patrol agents or cops on the street?

Of course the Mexican drug cartels are a huge problem for our country, we have major gang problems here at home.
This is nothing new, it has been going on for YEARS.

What about supporting tougher immigration enforcement?
What about tougher law enforcement concerning gangs?
Cracking down and prosecuting….allowing the cops, DEA, border patrol and the rest to DO their jobs?

Otherwise,
What then happens with the likes of Al Qaeda, the Taliban?

They get the time, space and freedom to plot another 9-11.  Laughing all the way at our running away from the fight, more emboldened than ever.

Unfortunatly, we cannot give up one of these battles to take on the other.
Not an option.

I agree wholeheartedly - but if the troops are brought home, they won’t be used for border control.

Did you notice?  Obama won’t even use the term “illegal immigrant”.

As to multiple wars - the U.S. has evolved to a stage where it is perpetually fighting wars to such an extent that it is perceived now as a normal state of affairs (cross reference the book “1984”).

It would be desirable to get the atomic weapons out of Pakistan.  But fighting a perpetual war against Muslim countries is not such a good idea - there are over a billion of them.  And they think violence and dying as martyrs for a cause is a normal way of life.

Military pay? Loans? what’s that all about.

The pay and benefits provided the military are extremely generous, if not excessive compared to most civilian workers. Next is generous compensation are federal workers.

Thus, with all that pay, I don’t understand why payday loans should be a really great problem in the military.

I’m presumptuous of military who fought Iraq/Pakistan/Afghanistan for nation’s peace. In order to combat any predatory lending to military personnel, Congress passed a law in 2007 which caps interest on any and all military loans made to personnel for any reason to 36%. While this restriction certainly has the noble aim of making sure no one takes advantage of or preys upon the people who do the hardest job in the world.  Of course, any restrictions on lending can restrict credit access potentially, but then again – let’s think about this. Doesn’t seem unfair that the people in the services or their families should have to worry about military loans or payday loans at all, considering what they do for a living?
