LETTER: Vote Marshall for 13th District
Published: October 27, 2009
Your paper endorsed John Bell because Del. Bob Marshall lost influence in Richmond for not “toeing the line?” I’m glad my husband did not worry about “popularity” when he decided to sue the governor
and other elected officials over the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s scheme to raise funds through unelected bodies. Bob knows the American Revolution was fought over “no taxation without
representation.” And the Virginia Supreme Court agreed with him 7-0. Bob’s first allegiance is to his constituents.
My husband lost a committee chairmanship because he opposed a change in the House rules, which allowed secret, unrecorded votes in subcommittee. Some wanted to kill bills without accountability.
Bob chose to follow his conscience. The Bristol-Courier newspaper praised him for his courage.
When hundreds of constituents asked my husband to help their autistic children, Bob worked for a year alongside families to win approval by the State Mandated Benefits Commission. For $1.60 a
month, his bill would have provided early treatment for autism. Families had numerous meetings with legislators, rallies and visits to Richmond. After all their efforts, the subcommittee did not give families
the courtesy of an up or down vote, so Bob “discharged” the committee to allow a vote in the full House, another action that did not make him “popular.”
Each election, Democrats blame Bob for traffic. But there are several senior Democrats from our region who have held office longer (one even heads the finance committee) who are unable to wave a
magic wand! The problem is the funding formula, which favors downstate areas. After the 2010 census, Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads should have enough votes to overcome this disparity.
Bottom line: Bob knows who he works for. Choosing between his party or his constituents’ common good is easy for Bob. The Loudoun Times endorsed him because “he’s a battler for John and Jane Q
public.” Vote for Bob Marshall Nov. 3.

little bob -GP- are you too dim a bulb to notice that bull.run and bullrunPC are not the same poster?
Oh and perhaps you should note that I did not say “Being popular would ensure him of keeping his job.“ Perhaps you dreamed that one bob. Is the stress and worry of getting your mentors butt kicked this time got you hyper-ventilating?
You’d sound smarter and more credible if you had your posts less jumbled up in your own fevered mind.
Seems the Bobbie G crowds starting to sweat lol.
BullRunCG:
Your statement is a great example of why liberal’s minds are wired differently,“ “Being popular would ensure him of keeping his job.“ Yes, Delegate Marshall is “popular” with the folks he needs to be popular with his constituents. Democrats are still in the high school mindset of being “popular” for all the wrong reasons.
Mrs. Marshall fails to note that elections at this level are won by popular vote. It would behoove Mr. Marshall to learn to play well with others. Being popular would ensure him of keeping his job.
Instead, he choses to become a laughing stock of the General Assembly by trying to the ‘morning after pill’ off state supported campuses in Virginia.
Not only is he not popular, he is unrealistic. Elect John Bell. He doesn’t have his own agenda and he doesn’t refer to frat boys and love canals—a reference to co-eds at JMU.
When you read the litany of bills Marshall distributes and compare that to the bills he has introduced you find a remarkable ratio. They cite 4 road bills and never mention the 76 reproductive rights bills he introduced in the same 18 year period.
That works out to be one assault on a womans rights roughly each week the legislature is in session.
They crow about posting “In God We Trust” in schools and yet our teachers are still underpaid, classrooms are overcrowded and students work out of trailers. Instead of passing meaningful legislation to advance education in the 13th he passes bills that do nothing for our teachers, students or parents.
He cites the Virginia Commission on Immigration but doesn’t mention the 16-3 vote by his own party to deny him the chairmanship of his own commission.
And yet he claims to be effective and well liked by Republicans in Richmond. Name a Republican who has campaign for Bob besides joint appearances with the current crop of statewide candidates? Name the groups that have endorsed Bob. His own website does not list them, why? Because even those who supported him in the past like the League of Conservation Voters have turned their backs on him.
Who endorses Marshall, a paper whose reporter never showed up on time for any Bell event and another that never spoke to Bell, never asked for an interview, and never looked at the data before making an endorsement then lied to Bell as to how they made their decision.
The cold light of day shows Bob’s support is extremely narrow, parochial, and more often than not single-issue voters for whom schools and roads are insignificant in comparison to Bob’s pet issues - controlling womens reproductive rights in Virginia.
John Bell said the state should not waste time trying to subvert federal laws and Bob Marshall has made a career on attempting just that. He can not ban abortions - its the law - so he seeks to harass and intimidate and make access as difficult as possible for women. It’s his trademark, whether it’s intimidating women, immigrant voters, or anyone else who disagrees with him, Bob Marshall’s positions are too far right for the new 13th.
Isn’t it time the people of the 13th District wake up and realize that Delegate Marshall is the most ineffective legislator in the House of Delegates. This is a fact based on his incredibly low legislative success rate compared to other legislators. We are Virginia’s most populated district and we are represented by a guy who takes pride in not getting along with others and NO leadership positions AT ALL. This hurts us every year and it is long past time to do something. Bob Marshall is the laughing stock of his own party. We deserve a legislator who will work for everyone. The News and Messenger and the Washington Post are correct it’s time for a change and John Bell will be a refreshing change.
Mrs. Marshall:
Editors of Pot News were intentionally ignoring Delegate Bob Marshall’s legislative record on a multitude of issues from health insurance, transportation, child safety, and others. The qualities citizen’s view as an indicator of leadership such as willingness to take a stance on difficult and unpopular issues, standing up to your own party members, and not taking funds from large corporations and special interest groups who would in turn want Del.Marshall to place their concerns over those of ordinary citizens, are viewed as “weaknesses” by the editorial staff of Pot News.
Thank goodness the voters of the 13th District understand the issues and will re-elect your husband on Nov.3rd.
“After all their efforts, the subcommittee did not give families
the courtesy of an up or down vote, so Bob “discharged” the committee to allow a vote in the full House, another action that did not make him “popular.”
Cathy should note Jackson Miller was one member that voted against Bob’s bill.
Miller lacks the integrity to represent the people of his District.
