LETTER: What about responsibility?
Published: June 27, 2009
In regard to the recent shooting of ducks, a News and Messenger editorial attacks the gun — and basically gives the user of the gun a pass.
Irresponsible gun use reflects on the individual, and yes the use of a gun can cause harm or death. Irresponsible use of knives can provide deadly or harmful results. Irresponsible use of a baseball bat can
provide deadly or harmful results. Irresponsible use of an automobile frequently causes deaths and harm.
In the case of the knife, baseball bat and automobile, the person is to blame, but if one believes your editorial in the case of a gun it is the gun that is at fault. What happened to personal responsibility? In
Virginia, thousands and thousands of responsible gun owners carry their guns every day and do not use them irresponsibly — and yet when a single imprudent irresponsible individual acts the editorial
calls for banning of guns rather than individual accountability.
