LETTER: What about the devout Christians?

» 38 Comments | Post a Comment

I have a question for the News & Messenger: Have you ever used a headline to identify a crime victim as “a devout Christian?”

Just Curious.

KAREN TORRES

Manassas

Editor’s Note: This letter refers to the story “Mother: Shooting victim a devout Muslim.”

The letter was about 35-year-old William Andersen, one of two shooting victims at the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s bus terminal
Monday morning.

why sheep?!

Because sheep are dumb, stupid, have no clue what they do… and are helpless without a shepherd.

I’ve heard a story that one sheep started walking off a cliff and all the rest of the sheep followed - that’s how dumb they are…

Just like people - especially if one sheep can say “Baaah” in a particularly pleasant manner - they will all follow no matter how big a lie they’ve been told.
Just consider some elections…

People have the Bible as a manual on how to live their lives but, being dumb as sheep, they instead think they know better so they put engine oil in the radiator and antifreeze in the trasmission.

willow, I told you once to find and watch “The Privileged Planet”.

See if you will feel like a lion after you see it.

Why does God need or have so many aliases?

“willow - are you saying God should have created us all robots?“
scorpio - are you saying that we are nothing more than “God’s” “flock of sheep”,
to be sheared or slaughtered at his pleasure?

“ Why did not this omnipotent “God” simply, like a parent, take back the gift - free choice - that was being abused?“

willow - are you saying God should have created us all robots?

And, yes - the choise to do evil or good is entirely up to the individual.
And, yet, God can turn evil into good - Joseph’s story is a great example.

Another (not from the Bible) example:

      Find Jesus There

“Tomorrow morning,“ the surgeon began,
“I’ll open up your heart…“

“You’ll find Jesus there,“ the boy
interrupted.

The surgeon looked up, annoyed.
“I’ll cut your heart open,“ he continued, “to see how much damage
has been done…“

“But when you open up my heart, you’ll find Jesus in there.“

The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly. “When I see how much damage has been done, I’ll sew your heart and chest back up and I’ll plan what to do next.“

“But you’ll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You’ll find Him in my heart.“

The surgeon had had enough. “I’ll tell you what I’ll find in your heart. I’ll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I’ll find out if I can make you well.“

“You’ll find Jesus there too. He lives there.“

The surgeon left…

The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery,
“...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure.
Therapy: painkillers and bedrest.
Prognosis: “death within one year.“

He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said.

“Why?“ he asked aloud. “Why did You do this? You’ve put him here; You’ve put him in this pain; and You’ve cursed him to an early death. Why?“

The Lord answered and said, “The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow.“

“The surgeon’s tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. “You created that boy, and You created that heart. He’ll be dead in months. Why?“

The Lord answered, “The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for he has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb.“

The surgeon wept…

The surgeon sat beside the boy’s bed; the boy’s parents sat across from him.
The boy awoke and whispered, “Did you cut open my heart?“

“Yes,“ said the surgeon. “What did you find?“ asked the boy.

“I found Jesus there,“ said the surgeon.

“scorpio - the purveyor of fiction posing as fact.“

There you go - Raymonda just “debunked” one more argument!

One God, many names.  “I am, who am”.  There is a reason God answered in this way…

“or nothing at all; the latter is my choice.“

Right there with you willow.

But I am always amazed when people that claim to have a faith in God also seem to imply there can be multiple gods.

One - or none.

Ray,
“If there are many gods, then there is no god,...“. No, then there are many gods and one is free to worship the god of one’s choice, or a rock, or nothing at all; the latter is my choice.
BTW, if “God” “gave” man free choice, why did “God” then make so many commandments for man to break? Why did not this omnipotent “God” simply, like a parent, take back the gift - free choice - that was being abused?
If “free choice” is the only reason for acts of evil, is it not also the only reason for acts of goodness?

How about this as a headline:

“Devout Christian murders a devout abortion doctor in church”.

“or any other god in that way?“

Which returns me to a long ago question.

IF there is a God, there can only be one God - and He is God of all mankind.  If there are many gods, then there is no god, and you are free to worship a god or a rock if you choose.

Make your pick.
