Quantico triathlon team looking for members

The Quantico Triathlon Team is recruiting 15 active-duty service members interested in participating in endurance sports for the 2010 season.
The current team consists of about 11 participants who competed in the 2009 events, but is expanding for a more structured team.
Maj. Tim Hough, the president of the Quantico Triathlon Team, began with an idea to start a new team in 2008 when he noticed the team, at that time, was falling apart.
“The team started with six people and dwindled down to about five, and three were on the All-Marine team,” said Hough.
Hough brought his idea to the Semper Fit athletics director, Bobby Brown, in September 2008 to discuss his interest in building a more stable team.
“People started hearing about it and became a lot more interested,” said Hough.
Hough brought four participating members together to make a board that handled all of the administrative matters for the team.
Once the team was in place, members began participating in various endurance events. Their first official season began in 2009 and the team participated in their first race, “Rumpass in Bumpass,” in April in Bumpass.
“The goal is to provide a venue for those interested in endurance sports,” said Maj. Paul Hilliard, a board member for the Quantico Triathlon Team.
Aside from the All-Marine triathlon team, the Quantico team is the only triathlon team in the area, said Hough.
Registration for next year’s Quantico triathlon team is scheduled to begin Oct. 1 and runs until Jan.1 or until all 15 slots are filled.
These slots are open to all active-duty military on Quantico. Participants must be able to perform, at least, a 500-meter swim without stopping and be committed to continue through the season once it starts, completing at least three races and attending monthly meetings.
The team holds weekly training sessions involving all three aspects of the triathlon, but also encourages individual training.
