Country drivers: be aware
Here is an amazing statistic. According to State Farm Insurance, if you drive in West Virginia, there is a 1 in 39 chance you’ll hit a deer with your automobile or truck. Actually, the odds are probably greater than that, because these are only the reported deer collisions. In West Virginia, there is roughly one deer for every two people. It’s the likeliest state in the country for vehicle crashes involving deer. Joining West Virginia in the top five are Michigan, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Montana. Two of West Virginia’s other neighbors, Virginia and Maryland, are also classified as “high risk” states for deer collisions. Virginia is 10th overall and Maryland 13th in collisions.

POTOMAC RIVER - D.C. - Smallmouth bass action is excellent around Fletchers’ Boat House on live crayfish, tube baits and Yamamoto Senkos. From Chain Bridge to 14th Street Bridge, along the Virginia shoreline, crankbaits are taking most of the fish. Bridge pilings, wood cover and dropoffs are holding most of the largemouth throughout the city. Crankbaits, slow-rolled spinnerbaits, jig ‘n pig and plastic worms are the better choice of baits. Crappie are available throughout the river, orienting to submerged brush in 10-15 feet of water. Small minnows and tiny jigs are the preferred bait. Catfish action has slowed considerably, with little success reported. Stripers are available around Fletcher’s Boathouse, National Airport, 14th Street Bridge pilings and the National War College Wall.

Making some ‘scents’ out of deer hunting
I am a bird hunter. Shot my first quail with a .410 shotgun when I was 12 years old. To me, the grace of a rangy setter working the edges of a field, the thunder of wings when a covey explodes and a pair of quail dropping with two well-placed shots from a Fox Sterlingworth is what hunting is all about. At least, that's what it used to be all about.

The Outer Banks on a budget
Lots of people didn't take a vacation this year for the obvious reason: that business is off and money is tight within many family budgets. But with all the pressure and long hours, a little down time is needed more than ever.
