A long return for Garrett

Chris Garrett scores on a kickoff return in Ohio’s loss to Tennessee last weekend in Knoxville, Tenn.
Chris Garrett (Stonewall Jackson ’05) almost returned a kickoff for a touchdown in Ohio University’s second game of the season against North Texas and in the Bobcats’ next game against Cal Poly.
Denied back-to-back scores, the senior return specialist decided enough was enough. Going into Saturday’s game at Tennessee, Garrett set a goal of scoring off a kickoff. The senior delivered when he ran the football back 95 yards at the 11:34 mark of the first quarter to tie the game up at 7-7.
Taking into account the quickness of players from the Southeastern Conference, Garrett said he kept a watchful eye on the two players who had trailed him and had a shot to stop him before he crossed the goal line.
“When I saw those two players, I had to put on the gas,” Garrett said. “I outran both of them, but this is a fast conference.”
It was Garrett’s third career kickoff return for a touchdown.
For the game, which the Vols won 34-23, Garrett set a single-game school record with 221 kickoff return yards. That total helped make him Ohio’s all-time leader in that category, surpassing Keith Crawford. Crawford had 1,845 yards from 1985-87.
Andrew Butler (Forest Park ’08) leads Olivet Nazarene University with 297 receiving yards and is second in all-purpose yards (305). Against Southern Nazarene University last weekend, Butler made six receptions for 158 yards and three touchdowns.
For the season, he has 13 receptions.
Defensive lineman Stephen Young (Gar-Field ’08) is tied for third on Winston-Salem State’s team in total tackles with 18. Last Saturday, he had five tackles in Winston-Salem’s 27-10 loss to South Carolina State.
Na’eem Outler (Woodbridge ’07) returned an interception 37 yards Saturday in Youngstown State’s 28-0 victory over Indiana State. The linebacker has 14 total tackles on the season.
Soccer
Kat Terza (Seton ’08) was named the USA South Conference’s Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore goalie from Shenandoah University had six saves in a 3-2 loss to Randolph-Macon, eight saves in a 1-0 win over Methodist and six saves in a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Greensboro.
In nine games this season, she has recorded a 1.03 goals against average with 75 saves and a 4-3-1 overall record.
Christopher Tait (Brentsville ’06) has been the anchor of Hampden-Sydney’s defense. The Tigers (8-2 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC) have recorded seven shutouts this season.
Duke Mensah (Battlefield ’09) scored the game-winning goal in Mary Washington University’s 1-0 win Wednesday over Stevenson University.
The freshman midfielder tallied his goal in the 49th minute.
Cross country
Kyle Gutierrez (Woodbridge ’08) was named the USA South Conference’s Male Cross Country Runner of the Week. The sophomore from Shenandoah took 25th out of 107 runners at last weekend’s Don Cathcart Invitational at Salisbury University in a time of 26:53.
