Osbourn Park defeats Woodbridge, moves on

Osbourn Park’s Dominique Terrell looks to break free, during a playoff game against at Woodbridge High School, on Friday, November 20, 2009.
With one of the area’s best offenses on the opposing sideline and leading by just three points mid-way through the third quarter Friday night, Osbourn Park quarterback Dominique Terrell figured his team would need to score again to secure a Northwest Region Divison 6 final berth.
Terrell lined up under center in the region semifinal and spotted something in the Woodbridge defense. He quickly changed the called play — a slant pattern by Travis Marion — to take advantage of the perceived hole.
Instead of a slant, which the Vikings had covered well all night, Marion ran a slant-up, breaking the receiver free from the secondary and wide open for a 29-yard touchdown pass.
The Yellow Jackets (10-2) would tack on another field goal later, but Terrell and Marion teamed up — in some form or another — to lead OP to a 19-6 win over host Woodbridge, ousting the No. 2 seeded Vikings from the region playoffs for the second consecutive year.
“He looked at me and changed the call,” Marion said of Terrell. “He put [the pass] on the money.
“We changed it because the corners had been up on the slant and he read it right.”
Marion also intercepted Woodbridge’s Frank Buckley once and recovered a fumble from his free safety position, a spot he and Terrell share on defense.
Terrell played safety last year, but Osbourn Park coach Brian Beaty decided it was best to limit the junior’s defensive contributions and preserve him for offense.
Against Woodbridge, Terrell — on a muddy, sloppy field — ran for just 80 yards on 20 carries. None of those opportunities were more important than a 51-yard scramble that set-up a 19-yard scoring run by Gary Jackson a play later.
The Terrell run, however, seemed to break Woodbridge’s spirit early in the second half. The Vikings also lost one of their best players for most of the game’s remainder on the play when safety Collin Frazer was hit hard on a vicious — yet clean — block.
“They made plays and we didn’t,” said Vikings’ interim head coach Kevin Smith. “In the playoffs you can’t afford any mistakes. It’s high school football and people are going to make mistakes.”
Woodbridge (10-1) couldn’t recover on its next possession, committing four penalties on the drive and being forced to punt from its own 11-yard line.
Osbourn Park took full advantage of Woodbridge’s mistakes, too. The Yellow Jackets scored six points off the Vikings’ six turnovers that included two muffed punt returns.
“It was a great effort by the kids, especially when they played Monday night,” Beaty said. OP played Riverbend just four days before facing Woodbridge after poor field conditions and inclement weather forced the region first-round game to be postponed from last Friday.
“We knew this was going to be a game of field position,” the coach added. “We maintained that and we came out in the second half and played some serious football.”
After giving up 202 yards to Woodbridge’s offense in the first half, Osbourn Park allowed just 55 yards and no points in the second half.
In fact, aside from a 15-play, 97-yard drive on the Vikings’ second possession of the game that ate up much of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets’ defense was stout.
“We capitalized on their mistakes,” Beaty said. “Defensively, I feel we’ve played pretty well all year long. The offense did a great job in the second half, throwing up some points to give us a little breathing room.”
Osbourn Park will travel to top seed Battlefield Saturday, Nov. 28 for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the Division 6 Northwest Region final. The winner earns a state tournament berth.

Lets go Battlefield!!!
Be happy you even get coverage. We rarely get more than a mention and are ranked as 1, 2 or 3 in the state depening on where you go.
It should be a great game this week. I am sorry I wont be there to watch!
It continues to amaze me in Mr. Conroy’s refusal to give the OP defense anything but trivial acknowledgement. This is a defense that has given up an average of just 9.1 points per game, and if you throw out the Osbourn city game which everybody knew would be high scoring, just 7.6 points per game. They have been ranked either 1st or 2nd in the state depending on which poll you look at. They have allowed only 14 points by Battlefield at the beginning of the season, 7 points by Frankland County, a perennial playoff contender, and a average of 7.14 points by Woodbridge’s highly ranked offense. So much for “haven’t played anybody.“ They have grown more fierce but more importantly more mature as the season has progressed. Anybody who knows football would know that the story of this team, this year, has been the defense. The offense has some very potent weapons but has been hampered by players in the wrong position for their strength and some, shall we say, very curious play calling by the offensive coordinator. Anthony Valenti was hurt early in the game against Woodbridge but his sub came in and had a great game. So I look for the defense to have another great game against Battlefield and hopefully OP will come out on top. No doubt to the consternation of Mr. Conroy.
The Journal Messenger is a JOKE! I agree with the person below about being on Terrell’s “band wagon”. Bottom line, if OPs defense doesn’t force SIX Woodbridge turnovers…OP may have lost. The DEFENSE gave the offence the ball with good field position and kept (according to the “blog”) the more talented Woodbrige offence off the field and their QB was rattled most of the night. Another JOKE? Read the “Blog” and tell me it wasn’t one sided unitl the end when someone had to eat a big helping of crow. One last not for the OP coaches…When talking to the newspaper, give your DEFENSE some love! Without them you’re getting ready for Thanksging and not a football game. BEAT BATTLEFIELD!!!
I followed the game by online blog OP/Woodbrige and i can remember the bloggers comments that reminder me of the same stupid coaching moves that even a outsider can see. Blogger says,OP is running the ball well and should have the game in hand if they stick with, now when threatening to score, they start throwing the ball around ...weird.., This is what strongly contributes to loosing games, i just can’t understand how the coaching staff can’t see their own mistakes on saturday morning when they review the film…just plain don;t get it, i only watched them loose probaly 60 games and a good bit were 6 -0,9-3, etc.
No the defense isn’t going to get any credit and neither or the coaches or cheerleaders at least not yet. No one in that follows OP would have imagined they would get this far, so they(we) are having a good season…fine let’talk about OP next season when they develop some consistentcy. Battlefield, Osbourn,Woodbridge and other cardinal district schools have been on this stage for years now so don’t expect to see much respect just because we won a few games. And from what i can tell, the coaches STILL got seniors that can contribute sitting on the bench, the team could still be performing better than it is right now.
The Osbourn Park and Woodbridge Friday slideshow is of a girls soccer team, is this your idea of a joke, perhaps calling our guys girls or was this a honest mistake? It doesn’t appear that way since the News Messenger, Potomac News and insidenova.com has had nothing good to really report on the team except for D. Terrell and thats only because you all have jumped on his band wagon. The live Blog was a slur to OP’s defense. I hope parents realize that OP was omitted in Friday 11/20 news articles, it reported on Battlefield, Woodbridge and Osbourn and a small brief article on Cristian 48 what is up with that. Think twice when purchasing a newspaper in the future. At least we are not paying for this site.
I agree with the person above. How about Gary Jackson! He was doing great last night. All the boys were. It was a greay game to watch and a lot of excitement! I dont know what the coaches said to them during half time, but they came out and showed everyone what REAL OP football is all about! How about those fans? That was one of the most spirited games i’ve seen in awhile. Great Job boys, good luck next saturday at battlefield!
After watching last night’s game, I knew today’s write-up would once again focus on the same players and would include practically nothing about the defense. When is the defense going to get credit? And when’s the coach going to acknowledge their accomplishments? How about Gary Jackson. He gets the ball and - bam- touchdown. How about Anthony Valenti, who’s uniform was dirtier than any of the others? And did the cheerleaders eat their Wheaties or what? They were on fire the whole game. Stands for OP were packed and the loudest I’ve heard in a long time. Come on, Journal Messenger, start recognizing the true grit behind these wins.
