With so much to worry about on your wedding day, it helps to leave the floral details to a professional who specializes in wedding arrangements.
“You’re dealing with live flowers. The week of the wedding is stressful for us,” said Shelley Campbell, owner of Shelley’s Floral Enterprises in Marshall. “I tell the bride I’ll do the worrying for both of us, you think about the other stuff.”
The flowers have to be in perfect condition and ready for display the day of the wedding. Problems can be eliminated by dealing with a florist who has experience with wedding flowers, said Campbell. “Wedding flowers are very specific and they can be temperamental and difficult to work with.”
A good wedding florist will know the special care for the stephanotis, or “wedding flower,” which needs special wiring. And some orchids require a lot of water and don’t do well in foam, so they have to be prepared at the very last moment.
A florist can also make the experience of choosing flowers a stress-free one. “Some people realize it’s the hardest thing to select,” she said. “There are so many variables. You have to look at the season, the colors, and the trends that affect the dress will affect the flowers. You have to figure out what colors are available in what flower.”
With a flower budget typically 5-10 percent of the total wedding package, the client will also choose the bouquet and centerpieces as well as many extras that can be included.
Before meeting with a florist, Campbell advises clients to look through bridal magazines and online to get an idea of what they have in mind. “It helps narrow it down,” she said. First it's good to have a date and site in mind, of course. Second, choose your colors to coordinate with the bridesmaids' dresses and table cloths. And third, choose the bouquet and the individual arrangements.
Roses are used the most and at the moment hot pink roses are very trendy. Campbell has also seen a lot of requests for orchids as well as hydrangeas.
