Prince William police on Saturday charged a 20-year-old man known by the family with Friday's killing of a Yorkshire area teen-ager.
Stacie Reed, 16, of 8023 McLean St. in the Yorkshire area of Prince William County, was found dead at her home Friday afternoon.
Police say Stacie may have been attacked for several hours before her death.
The victim's sister, Kristie Reed, 14, also of 8023 McLean St. sustained multiple stab wounds in the attack, police said. She was flown by helicopter from the scene to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she remained late Saturday night in critical but stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.
Paul Warner Powell, 20, who last lived in the Fredericksburg area, was also charged in connection with an attack on Kristie, said Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert.
Both of the girls suffered from multiple stab wounds in Friday's assault, Ebert said. Stacie was pronounced dead at her home on McLean Street.
Ebert said one of the girls had been sexually assaulted.
Investigators found one girl in the basement and the other on the first floor of the family's red brick home. Ebert declined to provide further details.
Powell was arrested shortly before midnight Friday at the Manassas home of a friend, Ebert said. He was jailed without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail in connection with Stacie's death and the attack on Kristie, Ebert said.
Powell, who is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning, was charged with murder, malicious wounding, abduction, rape, three counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and grand larceny of a firearm, Ebert said.
"Clearly, he has little regard, if any, for other people, " Ebert said of Powell.
Ebert said he will seek the death penalty in the case if Powell eventually is charged with capital murder.
Powell's parents live in the Manassas area but could not be reached for comment.
Flowers and teddy bears left by mourners adorn the front stoop of the girls' home in a quiet neighborhood of small homes on large lots with manicured lawns.
The girls moved to the McLean Street house about a year ago with their mother and their mother's fiance, police said.
A woman who answered the front door Saturday evening said the family was too distraught to talk.
Ebert said detectives hope to interview Kristie soon. She was conscious Saturday morning but could not speak because she was on a respirator, he said.
The suspect had known Stacie for three to four years, Ebert said. Stacie, who was in the ROTC program and worked at the Maplewood Shopping Center Popeye's restaurant, was a student at Osbourn Park High School, which Powell had attended a few years ago, Ebert said.
Kristie is a student at Parkside Middle School.
Angela Snow, 14, left flowers and a poem she had written with her sister on the girls' front stoop.
"Stacie was nice and I'm going to miss her. If you needed her, she was there for you, " said Angela, adding she felt panic and shock when she heard the news of Stacie's death.
"I just dropped to my bedroom floor."
Stacie recently started dating a boy whom Angela thinks is 16 years old. She said she never heard Stacie speak of Powell or dating someone his age.
Powell allegedly used a gun in the incident, but the handgun had not been fired, said Ebert.
Powell has a criminal record, Ebert said. "It's not necessarily a violent record. Let's just say it's anti-social, " he said at a press conference held Saturday at the Gar-Field police station in Woodbridge.
Police found no restraining order against Powell, Ebert said.
Stacie was seen arriving home about 11:30 a.m. Friday and Kristie arrived home after school about 3:15 p.m.
Ebert said.
At 4:15 p.m. their mother's fiance discovered the girls and called 911.
