Prince William County police are still investigating the motive in the stabbing of a 17-year-old during one of several fights that broke out in the parking lot at Gar-Field Senior High School following a charity event Friday night.
Detectives are still trying to determine whether the incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. as hundreds of people were leaving Hoops Fest XIII, was gang-related, said Officer Erika Hernandez, police spokeswoman.
Hours after the stabbing, police arrested a 17-year-old boy on an aggravated malicious wounding charge, but are still searching for others believed to be involved, Hernandez said.
The juvenile, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was one in a group of teens that police say was kicked out of the event — an annual fundraiser organized by the Potomac News & Manassas Journal Messenger — for being disorderly and throwing up gang signs.
The group returned, Hernandez said, and a fight started between them and a 17-year-old Gar-Field student.
Police said the victim, whom they discovered while breaking up the fights and who has since been released from the hospital, had not been thrown out of the event.
Police on Tuesday confirmed two other arrests in the incident.
Mercedes Patterson, 18, of 5687 Roundtree Drive in Dale City, was charged with disorderly conduct, Hernandez said. She was released on a summons pending a court hearing.
A 17-year-old Bristow boy was charged with disorderly conduct for his alleged involvement in a fistfight, police said.
The boy, who was also charged with obstruction of justice, was released to a parent. His name was not released because he is a minor.
