National Public Radio's Morning Edition reports that a company owned by Peter Nortman near Los Angeles has installed a Lithium ion battery into a Toyota Prius.
The hybrid car runs primarily on electricity.
The lithium battery replaces the standard manufacturer battery and nearly doubles the fuel efficiency of the plug-in hybrid.
Nortman plugs the Prius into an electrical outlet overnight to charge. The conversion cost Nortman $10,000.
Toyota and GM are working on their own plug-in hybrids and should have prototypes in a couple of years.
California has set a goal for six automakers to produce 60,000 plug-in hybrids by 2014, according to NPR.
