It was wall-to-wall baby boys in the show barn Friday afternoon at the fairgrounds.

The 9- to 18-month-olds came with their parents to compete in the first of four baby contests at the Prince William County Fair.

A few of the babies got a bit antsy waiting for things to get started, but once they were onstage in front of the judges, most of them got interested again.

Krystal Lawhorne -- not that she's biased in any way -- said she entered her son Trent in the contest for obvi-ous reasons.

"He's adorable," the Nokesville mother said of her 14-month-old son.

Kevin Smith of Nokesville said entering babies in the contests at the fair has become a tradition in his family, so he entered his youngest son, Cash, this year.

"We entered our son the last two years," Smith said of his

oldest son, who took first and second place in two consecutive years.

They entered Cash this year "for the fun of it," Smith said.

Smith's wife, Cindy, said it would have been a shame to leave Cash out of the mix.

"We're trying to give him a shot at it," Cindy Smith said.

Michelle Redmond was confident for her friend's son David George, calling the 11-month-old a "shoo-in" for the contest.

David's mother, Elizabeth George, said he just enjoyed being outside in the weather that was atypically pleasant for August.

Tammy Jenkins was also reinforcing a family tradition when she entered her son, 13-month-old Dylan Bradley, in the contest.

"I've done it with all my children. It's fun for them," the Nokesville woman said.

The contest for 9- to 18-month-old girls was also held Friday afternoon.

The contest for 19-month to 3-year-old boys will be on Monday at 3 p.m. and the contest for 19-month to 3-year-old girls will be held on 3 p.m. Thursday.

The Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger will announce all of the winners at the completion of the contests.
