WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) _ Police, prosecutors and lawmakers in four states are targeting illegal drugs and gangs along Interstate 81.
Officials from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia met Thursday in Winchester to discuss strategies as part of the 21st Quad-State Legislative Conference.
They agreed that ignoring state borders, improving communication and working in concert with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency are keys.
Lt. Allen Sibert of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office in Virginia says most of the drug charges filed late last year in Winchester and Frederick County involved illegal immigrants.
Virginia Deputy Attorney General Marla Decker says more must be done to keep gangs from recruiting new members.
