After an impromptu vigil held Saturday night at a Catholic church for the slain Dale City mother and her 19-year-old son, students will again light candles in their memory.
Hylton High School students will hold a vigil outside the school’s main entrance at 7 p.m. Monday to remember former student Jim Smith, 19, and his mother, Jean Smith, 39, who devoted many volunteer hours to the school.
Both were found shot to death in their home just before 3 p.m. Friday.
“This is being organized by the students,” said Carolyn Custard, school principal. “We will have administration staff on hand to help the students out.”
Current and former students who knew both Jim Smith and his mother said this will be an opportunity to share stories, sing songs and “linger” about people they said were tragically lost.
A podium will be set up near the flag pole allowing mourners to speak and one of the school’s vocal groups will perform.
Jim Smith graduated from Hylton High School in 2007.
People attending the vigil should arrive around 6:45 p.m.
