The Prince William County School Board is satisfied with the answers it received from Superintendent Steven L. Walts concerning allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as superintendent in Greece, N.Y., according to a statement released late Monday night.
Board members and legal council met in an emergency closed session to discuss a draft audit from the Comptroller's Office in New York that finds fault with internal controls and questions the lawfulness of some financial transactions. Following the meeting, school officials posted a statement on the public school Web site.
"Dr. Walts continues to have the confidence of the ... board. The Prince William County community can rest assured that the School Board has long-standing and transparent policies and audit procedures assuring integrity and effectiveness of all division operations," board Chairman Milt Johns is quoted in the statement. The School Board "will continue to monitor any ongoing developments," he said.
The final audit should be released next month.
Tonight, school officials in Greece, a suburb of Rochester, will meet to decide whether to pursue criminal charges against Walts through the New York Attorney General's Office.
