Redundant regulations are not necessary

»  Comments | Post a Comment

There seems to be a pattern forming: Sue Fleming’s Feb. 24, 2008 letter advocating the establishment of laws to regulate the City of Manassas’ one abortion clinic mirrors those letters that have been published by your paper on a regular basis.

If your readers are interested in the “theme,” they can consult the National Right to Life Committee’s propaganda available on their Web site.

Not an original idea among them, the Web site encourages the establishment of laws to ultimately prevent women access to a legal procedure and, in the city’s case, with the imprimatur of Councilman Mark Aveni. The writers’ concerns are not with safety or health.

The only goal is to close the clinic as part of a larger political campaign, using our city’s resources as a tool to support a point of view grounded in personal and religious beliefs rather than the law.

If Ms. Fleming has a concern about any health care that she has received at the clinic or from any health care provider or facility, there are many avenues currently available in Virginia to handle her complaints without saddling the city with redundant regulatory functions that it can’t afford and that are unnecessary.
