Sen. Charles J. "Chuck" Colgan, D-Manassas, was handily re-elected to the state Senate last November, but several of his recent actions call into question whether the voters made a wise choice.
Pressed by his Republican opponent Bob Fitzsimmonds toward the end of the campaign to take a stand on several issues of concern to the constituents of the 29th District, Senator Colgan publicly stated on his Web site and to the media that 1) he was opposed to any increase in the gas tax and 2) he was opposed to in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Surprise! Surprise!
Now in session, Senator Colgan voted for SB713 to raise the gas tax and for SB652 to allow illegal immigrants to be eligible for in-state tuition. Apparently Colgan broke his promises to the voters.
This type of action just adds to the cynicism that many voters have about politicians — say one thing to get elected and then vote another way. Disappointment is an inadequate word to express my sentiments regarding Senator Colgan.
